EAPN CYPRUS Is Europe 2020 helping to reduce poverty in Cyprus? What Progress on Poverty and Participation? EAPN WORKSHOP ON EU 2020 STRATEGY – 30/09/2013 EAPN CYPRUS QUESTION 1 Is Europe 2020 helping to reduce poverty in Cyprus? Assessment of the results drawn from our experience of engagement.

Europe 2020 was not taken into account when imposing Troika measures on Cyprus. -Hair cut on deposits over 100000 Euros. (Many workers lost 47% of their savings e.x. provident fund) Unemployment was rapidly raised to 17% (78000 unemployed people, July 2013) (50% youth unemployment, ) 2nd Taxation was imposed on the houses Fees on health care system for vulnerable groups.(before almost 85% of the population had access on free health care)

Reduction on minimum pensions – increase of poverty among pensioners. No development projects. Cypriot people are forced to immigrate to find job. Cuts on welfare benefits(single parents, asylum seekers and refugees). Reduction on wages(20%-30%), increase of working poor. Change the status and the character of the cooperative institutions. Closure of public organizations .

Are they going to stop here? What next? Is Europe 2020 possible? Has E.U future?

PROGRESS ON STAKEHOLDER PARTICIPATION What Progress on Poverty and Participation? EAPN WORKSHOP ON EU 2020 STRATEGY – 30/09/2013 QUESTION 2 PROGRESS ON STAKEHOLDER PARTICIPATION EAPN ACTIONS RESULTS

NO PROGRESS ON PARTICIPATION- ON THE CONTRARY. TROIKA INTERVENTION – NO SPACE FOR NEGOTIATIONS OR DIALOGUE GOVERNMENT UNABLE TO PROTECT SOCIAL DIALOGUE NO CONSULTATION OR INVOLVEMENT IN NSR(NRP NOT OBLIGATORY) DESPITE THE EFFORT OF CYPRUS EAPN. NGO ARE OUT OF THE PROCESS OF DECISION MAKING LIMITED REACTION FROM THE CITIZENS - DISAPPOINTMENT

What Progress on Poverty and Participation? EAPN WORKSHOP ON EU 2020 STRATEGY – 30/09/2013 QUESTION 3 KEY MESSAGES FOR CYPRUS GOVERNMENT AND EU TO MAKE PROGRESS ON POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION

PUT PEOPLE FIRST- AUSTERITY MEASURES MAY “IMPROVE” THE FIGURES OF THE ECONOMY BUT INCREASE THE FIGURES OF UNEMPLOYEMENT, POVERTY, HOMELESS, MISERY, SOCIAL MARKETS ETC. INVEST ON EDUCATION, INVEST IN CHILDREN INVEST ON DEVELOPMENT-FIGHT UNEMPLOYMENT AND EXCLUSION MAKE A EUROPE FOR PEOPLE AND NOT FOR BANKS AND MARKETS

What Progress on Poverty and Participation? EAPN WORKSHOP ON EU 2020 STRATEGY – 30/09/2013 MY QUESTION 4 DO WE STILL HAVE THE DEMOCRATICAL RIGHT TO VOTE FOR A BETTER AND JUST WORLD OR WE JUST HAVE TROIKA TO DECIDE FOR OUR DESTINY ACCORDING TO THEIR PRIORITIES........?
