ARPANET Advanced Research Projects Agency Network first wide area packet switching network originally created by the IPTO under sponsorship of DARPA

ARPANET Cont. August 30, 1969 BBN delivered first Interface Message Processor(IMP) to Leonard Kleinrock's Network Measurements Center at UCLA. Team responsible for building first node: Vinton Cerf, Steve Crocker, Bill Naylor, Jon Postel, and Mike Wingfield IMP was communicating with the local NMC host, an SDS Sigma 7 computer running the SEX operating system. Messages were successfully exchanged, and one computer ARPANET created.

ARPANET Cont. first full ARPANET network connection was next, planned to be with Douglas Engelbart's NLS system at Stanford Research Institute (SRI), running SDS-940 computer with Genie operating system and connected to another IMP. October 29th, 1969, connection established At the UCLA end, they typed in the 'l' and asked SRI if they received it; 'got the l' came the voice reply. UCLA typed in the 'o', asked if they got it, and received 'got the o'. UCLA then typed in the 'g' and the darned system CRASHED! Quite a beginning. ARPANET Cont. University of California at Santa Barbara was third site added to ARPANET, running on IBM 360/75 computer using OS/MVT operating system. fourth ARPANET site was added in December 1969 at University of Utah Graphics Department, running on DEC PDP-10 computer using Tenex operating system. July, 1975, DARPA transferred management and operation of ARPANET to Defense Communications Agency, now DISA. NSFNET then assumed management of non-military side of the network By 1980s, ARPANET global. Retired in 1990, and replaced with NSFNET

Ethernet 1973, at Xerox Corporation’s Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), researcher Bob Metcalfe designed and tested first Ethernet network. While working on way to link Xerox’s "Alto" computer to printer, Metcalfe developed physical method of cabling that connected devices on the Ethernet as well as standards that governed communication on the cable. Ethernet has since become the most popular and most widely deployed network technology in the world.

Ethernet Cont. Can be either Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN). Traditionally LAN Original Ethernet described communication over single cable shared by all devices on network. Once device attached to cable, had the ability to communicate with any other attached device. allows the network to expand to accommodate new devices without requiring any modification to devices already on network. Few hundred meters tops. Modern can be kilometers wide.
