1855 US Commodore Perry-forced Japan to open to Western Trade U.S. wanted to open door to trade in the vast markets of Asia-Especially Japan and China

Japan realized it had to modernize to keep up with the west Japan realized it had to modernize to keep up with the west. It began to modernize VERY quickly. Creating a Modern state in only 40 years.

Spheres of Influence Japan and the European powers-England, France, Germany, Russia, Portugal, Austria, and Italy expanded their spheres of influence over China Spheres of influence: foreign nations claim special rights & economic privileges in foreign countries.

Open Door Policy-1899 2. US Sec of State John Hay develops the Open Door Policy(Open Door Note) -China should open to equal access to all countries. US intentions clear in Asia Europe and Japan neither Accepted or rejected the note.
