Introduction to… Simple Machines!

What are simple machines? Simple = easy, plain, uncomplicated Machine = an apparatus used for work Simple Machine = basic tool

Check this out! Bill Nye

Why are we learning this? We’re going to investigate how simple machines are used in our world. We’re going to investigate how to design a simple machine to solve a simple task. BUT FIRST We need research more back ground information…

Force – what is it? Once, my big brother forced a dish cloth into my mouth, but that wasn’t science… Lets see if Tim and Moby can help us out with this question Brain Pop – Force What do you know now about force?

Tim and Goby When Goby hit Tim in the bumper car, Tim explained that a force is something that does 1 of 3 things. A force makes it… Speed up, Slow down, Change direction Tim told us that there are 2 main types of forces. What are they? Friction Gravity Lets use a Venn Diagram to compare these 2 forces Click on diagram

One thing friction and gravity have in common is… They are both forces One way they are different is… Contact (touching) and non contact (not touching) Is friction contact or non contact? How do you know? Is gravity contact or non contact? Forces Article

Picture With a partner you will make a list of everything you see in this picture that is affected by GRAVITY or FRICTION in a T chart
