Building the capacity of Climate Knowledge Brokers

CKB’s vision is a world in which people make climate sensitive decisions fully informed by the best available climate knowledge. It describes what we think is important to achieve a bold vision: how to get a world in which people make climate-sensitive decisions fully informed by the best available climate knowledge.

Climate knowledge brokers improve the availability of climate change information for decision-making Chains of ‘knowledge brokers’ act as filters, interfaces and translators Across different disciplines, fields and sectors. Range of methods and communication approaches to meet users’ needs

Goal of Climate Knowledge Brokers To make climate knowledge more accessible & used in decision making processes Planning and implementing NDCs, NAPs, etc. Policies on development, land use, energy, transport, etc. Business decisions of the private sector Members of the CKB Group support these processes where they can

100s OF CLIMATE KNOWLEDGE BROKERS

Capacity Building for climate knowledge brokers

Why? “How do I become a climate knowledge broker?” Unlock capacities towards CKBs vision Sharing best practices, lessons learned

Challenges of CKBs Capacity Building It's a broad field - how to organize, where to focus? Who is our target audience? What do they need? How can we reach them?

Capacity Building within CKB: examples

Interactive Workshops What do we know? What have we learned? How can we help? Develop new approaches together Highly interactive, small groups Climate Knowledge Sharing Clinics ‘Patients’ bring a challenge to the table ‘Doctors’ diagnose and suggest solutions

Collaboration: Joint Projects CKB promotes collaborative projects Benefits: Getting to know your counterparts Know who is good at what Learn from others’ experience Learning by doing Example CT Funded by CDKN Lead by REEEP Partners included NREL, IDS, SEI (and their platforms) Technical development by Semantic Web Company Follow Up projects with many others

Other Resources Webinars Books & Articles Videos about climate knowledge brokers and brokering Developed in collaboration and with input from climate knowledge brokers!

Capacity Building Examples of Members NREL / Clean Energy Solutions Center (CESC) Webinars “Ask an Expert” NDC Cluster (GIZ, WRI, SSN, UNDP, LEDS, CDKN) NDC Helpdesk

Capacity Building Examples of Members CARE: Adaptation Learning Programme Participatory Scenario Planning: process for collective sharing and interpretation of climate forecasts. CTCN / UNFCCC Technical Assistance LEDS GP Annual workshops, regional workshops Remote Expert Assistance on LEDS (REAL)

Who to work with for successful NDC implementation? All sectors and levels For a committed project, you need buy in from all involved Pay close attention to audience and their needs Same content, but Other messaging and language needs Different communication channels

The Challenges of Limited Resources Lessons from CKB: Do what you can with what you have Leverage co-hosting and co-development where possible Don’t reinvent the wheel Collaborate for extended learning Use multiplier effects from partners
