Abroad in Norway Nord Universitet Camran Etherton

My name is Camran Etherton My name is Camran Etherton. I spent the Spring of 2016 in Norway, from January to July. It was a life changing experience for me, and really opened me up from my own bubble. I grew a lot during my time in Norway

This was a few days before the sun crested the mountains. When I first got off the plane in Bodø (pronounced similar to Buddha), it was dark… and it stayed dark for 3 weeks. It wasn’t until early February that the sun finally peaked above the mountains to the west. Those rays that shone on me that day were some of the best. This was a few days before the sun crested the mountains. My favorite part about the darkness is that you have 4-5 hour long sunsets and sunrises.

Here is another beautiful Bodø sunset/rise

Another great part about the darkness was that we lived in international housing. Since it was so cold and dark outside we really were able to bond over drinks, dinners and cards in the community kitchens. Here is one of our international dinner potlucks where we each tried to bring food from our home countries. I made hot wings…

ISU of Norway This program really helped to involve international students and is ran by other international students. I made so many friends from attending their events

The first event we attended was caving

Another ISU Trip: Weekend Trip in Cabins

Fishing Trip Our Cabins

I even found some romance in my life with a beautiful Ukrainian named Nataliia

Backpacking in Norway was harsh, and cold… But I’ve never seen such beautiful landscapes and it was amazing to immerse yourself into the wild

Fish and Norway This is how Norwegians preserve the cod for future use hundreds of years ago, and they keep the tradition alive today… It’s called Lutefiske.

Here is me (farthest), and my two German friends fishing for pollock, and cod.

One of the smaller cods I caught

Beer in Norway is Expensive Here is me and my friend brewing our own ale… Cheers!

Spring Break 2016! My friends and I, rented a car and drove north with our gear. Riccardo: Italian Me: American Vince: German Sanna: Swedish Ida: Austrian Nivikka: Greenlandic

Trying to stay warm while snow camping. can be difficult with Trying to stay warm while snow camping can be difficult with certain friends

International Food Competition They put me next to the Canadians… French fries and gravy are apparently a pretty big thing there… I made burger sliders this time… I felt like it represents America.

Wine Wednesday at the student bar Or in Norwegian… Vinønsdag

National Day of Norway (May 17th) Syttende Mai The women wore their bunads, which is a traditional Norwegian attire, and the men wore formal suits.

My last camping trip…

Getting close to our destination after several hours of hiking Getting close to our destination after several hours of hiking. Note: It’s 11PM right now.

When I went to bed the tide was right near my tent… It was weird knowing I was surrounded by the Atlantic on this tiny sandbar TENT

The following day boats showed up The following day boats showed up.. However we had the whole place to ourselves all night and morning

Marine Mammals Class We spent a week in cabins in the islands north of Bodø, called Lofoten Every day we would go out on the zodiac and search for marine mammals. Afterwards we would return to our cabins and work on our report.

These were our cabins for the class

A short hike from our cabins

Thanks for checking this out! Cheers! Goodbye! Skål! Ha det bra!
