How often is PD offered? During summer months Teacher Work Week Yearly During summer months Teacher Work Week Monthly Faculty Meetings Grade Level Meeting Quarterly Staff Development Days PLC Days Across the board, Professional Development should be offered during the stakeholders given contractual hours. This encourages everyone to focus on student achievement instead of just those who volunteer. **Speak about the graph – When Professional Development is Offered During the School Year**

Balancing Staff Development While Focusing on Student Achievement Meaningful How is it determined? Engaged Stakeholders Student Assessment Data YAY! It is Monday, and you know what that means? Observation, surveys and staff feedback Test scores and benchmark assessments State and Federal mandates Technology trends and initiatives Central Office mandates How Professional Development was Determined Professional Development should be meaningful, engage the stakeholders, and encourage collaborative thinking. The overall common goal of increasing student achievement. This will ensure that the stakeholders realize the benefits outweigh the scheduling burden. **Simply gathering student-assessment data is inadequate. Instead, educational leaders and teachers must learn to analyze data and apply what they learn from the data to the classroom because it can reveal vital information. Professional development helps us examine and reexamine, or tortured, until it finally reveals its meaning. Have you ever thought…”YAY! It’s Monday, and you know what that means? Another Professional Development Day! What a waste of time?!?” How do we as educational leaders lead stakeholder through the Standards of Learning and the VDOE without making them crazy?!?

Goals & Next Steps Meaningful Next-Steps and Examples of Effective Professional Development Meaningful Collaborative Thinking Benefits When follow-up happens How can these results adjust professional development it he future? When held during the summer months Makes you think about your practice and provides modeling Professional Development should be meaningful, engage the stakeholders, and encourage collaborative thinking. This will ensure that the stakeholders realize the benefits outweigh the scheduling burden. More examples of effective Professional Development: * When offered at the right time and gives staff time to practice * Real-life examples from the presenter Need it to be useful Examples of Ineffective Professional Development: No follow through Being lectured to without any collaboration or hands-on activity Professional development given by Central Office Forced on staff and was not relevant to the school or the classroom Does not effect teaching practice or have a focus on student achievement What is the purpose of staff development? Professional Development is the school and districts way of ensuring stakeholders who impact student achievement continue to strengthen their skills.
