1st Period What do the obstacles Malia Obama faces with the press, say about society today? Analyze the Obama’s protective nature of their daughters versus all of the controversy surrounding them. Would you want to protect your kid’s privacy, even after 18 years of age, knowing your family is always in the limelight? Why or why not? Evaluate why Malia is the target of racial harassment, while being admired by others? Do you support the way the Obamas care for and shelter their daughter? Why, or why not? Would you protect your children the same way the presidential children were protected? Compare and contrast Malia’s actions with other White house children. What societal/political factors have shifted, that caused a change in the disposition of presidential children? What makes Malia not as “newsworthy” compared to the past children of presidents? When was Malia Obama officially not sheltered anymore? How are the rules different for Malia Obama, than for other kids? Compare and contrast the parent’s in todays society to the Obamas.

2nd Period Questions 1. What if Malia didn’t choose to take a gap year? Explain what course she might have taken? 2. How does Malia compare to other presidential children that have left the White House? 3. Apply prior knowledge to explain the possible ramifications of having children in such a public position? 4. Why based on all that you know would the Obama children preserve their father’s legacy? 5. Give your opinion on whether the Obama girls will be drawn back to their parent’s legacy? 6. Are the ethical values of the media in check with the Obama’s? And to a lesser extent, of previous presidential families? 7. Are the Obama’s extraordinarily protective or just defensively natured? 8. Why according to the media, is Malia’s privacy so important for the media to capture information about her? 9. Compare how the media has treated other “first Children” compared to Malia? 10. Compare and contrast the different media reactions to the video of Malia at the party? 11. What is the method the White House has implemented regarding presidential children? 12. Through social media outlets, how is Malia portrayed in society?

What if the Obamas never tried regulating Malia’s appearance in the media? 4. Compare and contrast Malia and other presidential children and how they acted while being raised in the White House. 5. Relate Malia’s keeping of her father’s legacy, to your parents, and how they would want you to keep your family legacy. 8. Why do you think that now and in the past, presidential daughters seem to get caught doing illegal things? 10. How do you think Malia’s life will be different now that she is 18 years old? 11. Based on what you know, do you believe that the restrictions placed on presidential kids are too extreme? 12. Compare and contrast Malia’s life to yours.

How would you respond to the media reporting on your 18 year old daughter? 3. If Malia would not have taken a gap year, and Obama kept her sheltered until he left the presidency, would Malia look better in the public’s eyes? 4. Predict whether Malia and Sasha Obama will continue to be in the Media after their father is no longer president. 5. How does Malia’s time in the White House compare to Chelsea Clinton’s? 6. What if president Obama didn’t keep Malia off social media? Would she be viewed the same? 7. How does paragraph 19 compare to the themes addressed in High School Training Ground? 8. How will Malia Obama’s adult life be affect by her father’s presidency? 9. Why did the Obama’s take such precautions in hiding their children from the media? 10. How are Malia and the past president’s children different? 11. How exactly have the rules changed for the media, following Malia’s departure from the White House? 12. How will Malia’s family’s past affect her future?
