INTRODUCTION About Your Teacher – Your coordinator for this subject is Sorab Daver. Sorab is a Certified Financial Planner and teaches Finance and Accounting subjects at the Northern Sydney Institute

INTRODUCTION Please note that these PowerPoint Presentations are not to be a substitute for the textbook – the textbook is mandatory In the organisations of today, the roles of managers and employees are getting more demanding and complex There is tremendous amounts of competition, pressure, stress and CHANGE….

A famous quotation states “The only thing that is constant is Change… Reflect on this for one minute to fully understand what this means!

What this unit is about….. Given the challenging nature of the organisation and the fact that change is constantly occurring, it is very important that employees know how to manage their work requirements. How do you prioritise your tasks, to ensure that the most important and critical tasks are completed before the others? How do you achieve the key performance indicators and manage your own personal development?

Section 1.1 of the Text book. Let’s get started Section 1.1 of the Text book. Ensure that work requirements are understood and confirmed In order for you as an employee to do your job effectively, you need to first understand what the business or organisation needs to achieve What environment is the organisation existing in – what is the laws and government regulations, the code of practice for the industry and the organisations own mission statement?

What are the external legal requirements? What is the mission statement of the organisation? What is the organisation about? How does it achieve its goals? Why does it have these goals?

Business Strategies - If Employees are to do their job effectively they will require more clarity and detail than the information provided in the mission statement What should a business strategy contain? Business Plans – these should be made available to all staff and should contain a clear and detailed description of what the organisation is trying to achieve Policies and Procedures – Before an employee starts to implement the business plan, they need to know the frame work of rules that they need to work within – these are set out in the policies and procedures

Duties Statement- Employees also need to have a detailed description of their roles and responsibilities – these are provided as a complete set of instructions for each position in the organisation What is the purpose of the Duties Statement? What should a Duties Statement contain?

Standard operating procedures- General instructions on how to perform a task – i.e. what greetings should you use when you answer the telephone? Operational Plans – In large organisations, each section would develop their own operational plan This would take the overall business plan of the organisation into account

Remember, objectives need to follow the SMART principle?

Review the objectives provided in the Activity in section 1 Review the objectives provided in the Activity in section 1.1 – Analyse if their follow the SMART principle

Key Performance indicators Is a quantifiable measure of performance, whereas the objective is the benchmark against which the KPI is measured. What are some traps to avoid when setting KPIs and Objectives?.

Performance Management Most organisations would provide KPIs to their employees and these would be monitored on a regular basis Performance management is Vital – Why?

Performance & Motivation – The Expectancy Model Motivation is a key factor in job performance. The Expectancy Model states that in order for employees to be fully motivated, there are four levels of questions that they need to address Q1 Do I know WHAT to do? Q1 Do I know HOW to do it? Q1 If I do it, will it get RESULTS? Q1 Are the results what I really VALUE?

Performance & Motivation – The Expectancy Model Using the expectancy model and its four levels of questions, describe your own levels of motivation for completing the assignment for this unit of study Source: http://academlib.com/2842/management/argyriss_theory
