“The Hollow Men” (part1& 2) By T.S. Eliot To:……………………………………. Prepared by: Mr. Salman Taki
Who is T.S. Eliot ? Thomas Stearns Eliot(September 26, 1888 – January 4, 1965) was a playwright, literary critic, and an important English-language poet of the 20th century. "It wouldn't be what it is, and I imagine it wouldn't be so good ... if I'd been born in England, and it wouldn't be what it is if I'd stayed in America. It's a combination of things. But in its sources, in its emotional springs, it comes from America."
We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men
Head piece filled with straw. Alas! Leaning Together Head piece filled with straw. Alas!
> ____ Are quiet and meaningless Our dried voices, when We whisper together ____ >
As wind in dry grass-Or rats’ feet over broken glass-In our dry cellar
Shape without form, Shade without colour, Paralyzed force, gesture without motion;
With direct eyes, to death’s other kingdom Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death’s other kingdom
Remember us, if at all, not as lost
Violent souls, but only As the hollow men The stuffed men
Eyes I dare not meet in dreams in death’s dream kingdom These do not appear
There, The eyes are sunlight on a broken column
And voices are In the wind’s There, is a tree Swinging Singing
More distant and more solemn Than a fading star
Let me be no nearer In death’s dream kingdom Let me also wear such deliberate disguises
In a field behaving as the wind behaves No nearer- Rat’s coat, crow skin, crossed staves
Not that final meeting In the twilight kingdom
