The Guiana Shield Challenge Thousands of tree species Complex multi-national contexts Little information sharing (language)

Workshop Objectives Improving knowledge sharing on tree species ID in Guiana Shield Generate a clear overview of existing resources and capacities Identify knowledge gaps and suggest tools and activities for improvement Create network to share knowledge and expore future collaboration

Draft List of Tree Species of the Guianas and Amapá (Scientific Names & Local Names)

Steps Request Lists - from national institutions in the Guiana Shield Gather Information - international institutions/experts Harmonize National Lists Produce Draft Regional Tree List

Collected Tree Lists Life form Total number of records Total number of common names Unique records? Amapa n.a. French Guiana Trees > 10 cm 1,688 1,460 Yes Suriname Trees 714 Guyana All plants 11,102 954 No

Challenges with lists available from national institutions No information for Amapá +/- Complete tree checklist available for French Guiana only  Additional information requested from other institutions / experts

Lists from other institutions/experts: Flora do Brazil – dataset request Resulting table: 1173 trees 447 have vernacular names Uncertain which names specific to Amapa

Smithsonian Institution Database Total # Duplicates? Vernacular names? Suriname 1085 yes no Guyana 2995 No Smithsonian Institution Database

Lists from other institutions/experts: Naturalis Biodiversity Center - NHN Suriname Data - Blumea “Index of vernacular plant names of Suriname” Vernacular plant names in the different local languages Received as pdf, further prepared as excel file If lists like this exists for the other countries?

Tool used to prepare comparable lists: Taxonomic Plant Resolution Network All names were converted to the “accepted name” with the accepted family and accepted authors using TNRS: http://tnrs.iplantcollaborative.org Only records with an accepted name are maintained

Preparation - final list of Amapá Taxonomic Name Resolution Service Tree list with 1173 trees found in Amapa Final List Amapa: 1080 trees - 429 vernacular names 64 duplicates were removed Trees with no “accepted name” were removed

Preparation - final list of French Guiana Taxonomic Name Resolution Service Tree list with 1688 trees found in French Guiana Correction of spelling errors Removal of duplicates Retaining trees with “accepted name” Final List French Guiana: 1511 trees - 1289 vernacular names

Preparation - final list of Suriname Tree list Suriname Taxonomic Name Resolution Service Tree Checklist SI List Blumea Final tree list for Suriname: 1385 tree species 1100 with vernacular names + vernacular names Tree list Suriname

Preparation of the final list of Guyana Plant list Guyana Taxonomic Name Resolution Service Checklist SI Cleaned up tree check list SI: removal of 307 records only to genus level Final tree list for Guyana (first draft) - 1773 tree species 415 with vernacular names + vernacular names

Preparation of the final list Final List Amapa Final List French Guiana First draft Tree list for the Guiana Shield Final tree list for Suriname Unified per accepted name Final tree list for Guyana
