Design brief for the museum We would like our new museum to tell the story of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. The central theme is the railway’s history over 100 years and the people who have been key to that change.

Design brief for the museum Ratty people The owners The workers The engineers Passengers and users of the railway

Design brief for the museum Themes The people who built and contribute to the railways survival Railway workers and engineers Train designs have changed over time to respond to changing technologies and society’s demands.

Design brief for the museum The design brief for the new Train Shed. Designers consulted with the public to find out what they would like. Concept designs are available from the museum to show children the detail of the work involved.

Writing for museums The museum has lots of objects to show. Each object tells a story or part of a story. How can children write labels for objects to attract visitors’ attention?

Writing for museums For example, the next slide shows one of the first Kodak folding cameras. This is the sort of camera that Mary Fair used to take her photographs of life in Eskdale. Children can use information about Mary to bring the story to life. They can use Mary’s story to date the camera.

Create a new interpretation board Ratty people

Writing for museums These photographs show people who worked on the Ratty. What can children find out about these people? How might they find out more? All of the photos are on display or in the archive at the museum.
