Characterization

Important Definitions Characterization: The techniques an author uses to represent a character as a real person Character Trait: A distinguishing feature of an individual ALL ABOUT VOCABULARY & PRECISION OF LANGUAGE

In your own words… Rewrite the definitions from the previous slide in simpler terms. Characterization Character Trait

Types of characterization DIRECT: The specifically author tells you what a character is like. The traits are given EXAMPLE: Juan Pablo was a very nosey boy.

Types of characterization INDIRECT: The author shows you what the character is like through: What the character does, thinks, and says How the character looks (sometimes) What others think and say about the character The traits must be inferred EXAMPLE: Juan Pablo was always trying to listen in on people’s conversations to get the latest gossip.

Now you try! Write one example of direct characterization THEN, write one example of indirect characterization for the same character and same trait.

Types of characters Protagonist: main character or hero Antagonist: character that creates conflict/is in opposition to main character Minor characters: have relationship to main character

Types of characters Who’s who in Spiderman?

Types of characters Dynamic (round) Character: A character whose traits change and develop throughout story

Types of characters Static (flat) Character: A character whose traits remain the same throughout the story

Let’s APPLY IT! Return to the blog or to my Evernote and respond to the 4 questions with your group. You will need to use what we learned today and apply it to what we have read in The Giver.
