By Holly Bailey April 21st 2017 The Vikings !!! By Holly Bailey April 21st 2017

Who were the Vikings ? The Vikings were fierce warriors that invaded and took over Britain over 1000 years ago ( 787 AD ). The Vikings first invaded Lindisfarne off the coast of north east England. In 793 AD Vikings attacked the Christian monastery at Lindisfarne in Northumbria. They were pagans, not Christians like most people in Britain. The monasteries were easy to attack because the monks that lived there had no weapons. Instead they had valuable treasures, such as gold, jewels and books. There was food, drink, cattle, clothes and tools too - tempting for greedy Vikings !!!

Where did the Vikings come from ? The Vikings came from three countries of Scandinavia : Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The name 'Viking' comes from a language called ‘Old Norse’ and means ‘pirate invade’ .

How did the Vikings get to England ? The Vikings built longboats so that they could swiftly and silently sail across the sea to England.

The Viking gods and death Some days of the week were named after Viking gods. There names are Tyr ( Tuesday ) , Odin ( Wednesday ) , Thor ( Thursday ) and Freyja ( Friday ) . The Vikings believe that if you die in honour, glory or in battle you get sent to VALHALLA ( Viking heaven ), but if you die for a silly or dishonourable reason you get sent to HELL !!!
