Government Regulations to Control Diseases Target: I will be able to explain how government regulations influence health promotion and disease prevention   Department of Health and Human Services (HHS): Responsible for preventing the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases in the United States. Pg. 67

Including: Establishing standards for medical examinations of people destined for the US, monitoring quarantined individuals, and governing the movement of persons, animals, and cargo. About the HHS

FDA: Food and Drug Administration- a federal agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services FDA helps to speed up innovations that make medicines more effective, safer, and more affordable

They help the public get the accurate, science-based information about medicines and foods to maintain/ improve their health. The FDA regulates/ assures the safety of: Foods: dietary supplements, bottled water, food additives, infant formulas, etc. Drugs: prescription and non-prescription (over-the-counter) drugs Biologics: vaccines, blood and blood products, cellular and gene therapy products, tissue and tissue products

Medical Devices: tongue depressors, bedpans, pacemakers, dental devices, surgical implants, prosthetics, etc. Cosmetics: color additives found in makeup and other personal care products, skin moisturizers and cleansers, nail polish and perfume

Veterinary Products: livestock feeds, pet foods, veterinary drugs and devices Tobacco Products: cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco, smokeless tobacco About the FDA

CDC: Center for Disease Control and Prevention- works 24/7 to protect people from diseases, injuries, disabilities, and other problems associated with natural disasters and bioterrorism

CDC’s Role: Detecting and responding to new and emerging health threats Tackling the biggest health problems causing death and disability for Americans Putting science and advanced technology into action to prevent disease Promoting healthy and safe behaviors in communities and the environment About the CDC

OSHA: Occupational Safety and Health Association- ensures safe/healthy working conditions by preventing workplace injuries and deaths and holding employers accountable for safe workplaces

There is a strict set of federal safety standards to which all businesses must adhere; OSHA inspects workplaces and enforces them. Providing workers with information about hazardous working conditions Proper disposal of hazardous materials Requiring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, respirators, noise level limitations, fall protection (nonslip shoes, harnesses, lifts, railings, etc.) Summary
