EXTRACTION 1 strawberry Clear laundry detergent (5 mL) Water (45 mL)2 tsp of salt Ice cold rubbing alcohol (25 ml or 5 tsp) 1 Ziploc® bag 1 coffee filter Funnel Tweezer (or popsicle stick) Collection cup

Safety First Put strawberry in bag. Remove air and seal. Gently squeeze breaking up all the big chunks.

Add 2 teaspoons (5 mil soap) Noble Foundation suggests clear soap (Woolite) 3 Tablespoons Water (45 mil water) Add 2 teaspoons salt. Stir GENTLY to mix the solution. Lysis Buffer The soap breaks the cells open. In order to get to the DNA, we have to break the cells open. Salt helps the DNA precipitate out of the solution at the end of the experiment. Mix gently, no bubbles. Precipitate: the process of a solid forming out of a solution

Add Lysis Buffer to the strawberry Close bag and gently knead the bag. The cells are breaking open to separate the DNA. Add Lysis Buffer to the strawberry You will still see chunks of the berry. We do not need those so we will filter them out of the solution.

Open up the outside flap and form a funnel Open up the outside flap and form a funnel. Place inside the plastic funnel. Flatten out a coffee filter. Fold it in half, crease the edge and fold in half again forming four quarters.

FILTRATE: material that has passed through a filter Pour the solution into the filter and collect it in the cup. We are now collecting what is called a Filtrate. It will take minute for all to drain. Can help by squeezing gently but avoid breaking the paper filter or squeezing chunks into the cup. FILTRATE: material that has passed through a filter

MUST BE COLD Pour 5 teaspoons (25 mil) alcohol into cup

Strawberries are octoploids (8 copies of DNA). Solution becomes cloudy on top. This is the DNA separating from the solution. Strawberries are octoploids (8 copies of DNA).

STRAWBERRY SALSA 1 pint strawberries, hulled and finely diced 1 jalapeno, stem and seeds removed, finely diced Half of small red onion, peeled & finely diced (about 1/2 cup) 2/3 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro, loosely-packed Juice of lime, about 2 Tablespoons Pinch of salt and black pepper Toss all ingredients together until combined. Season with extra salt and pepper if desired. If you like a sweeter salsa, stir in a few teaspoons of warmed honey. Serve with tortilla chips.
