OBJECTIVE 1.04: Select interior lighting fixtures.

Lighting has various functions. Lighting can: Make a task easier to complete Contribute to safety Add beauty and set a mood

Lighting sources

Natural light comes from natural sources, such as the sun or a flame. Colors are more true in natural lighting.

Consider your amount of natural light when choosing artificial light. Northern facing windows receive the least natural light Southern facing windows receive the most natural light

Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) TYPES OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT Incandescent Light Fluorescent Light Fiber Optics Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

Incandescent bulbs last about 1200 hours. INCANDESCENT LIGHTING is produced by electricity passing through a filament in a glass bulb. Incandescent bulbs last about 1200 hours.

Halogen bulbs last about 2500 hours. HALOGEN BULBS are another form of incandescent light Produce bright light and is more energy efficient than regular incandescent Can be very hot to touch Halogen bulbs last about 2500 hours.

FLUORESCENT LIGHT is produced when chemicals inside a glass tube transform ultraviolet rays.

COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS (CFLs) are fluorescent lights that screw into regular incandescent light sockets. CFLs last about 10,000 hours.

LIGHT EMITING DIODES (LEDs) are made of crystals on silicon chips about the size of a grain of salt. LEDs last about 50,000 hours

FIBER OPTIC light flows through hair-like strands of glass FIBER OPTIC light flows through hair-like strands of glass. Does not give off any heat.

Categories of Lighting

Lighting 1. General 2. Task 3. Accent

1. General lighting provides a uniform level of lighting throughout the room.

2. TASK LIGHTING focuses light on an area where it is most needed. Provides extra light for reading, cooking, sewing, etc.

3. ACCENT LIGHTING is very bright and is aimed directly on a specific object to create a dramatic effect.

Ways to deliver light

NONSTURCTURAL LIGHTING is not built in and can be easily moved and changed.

STRUCTURAL LIGHTING is built-in and wiring is usually hidden.

Valance Lighting: mounted over a window hidden by a valance shines light up and down.

CORNICE LIGHTING mounted near the ceiling shines downward.

Cornice lighting over traverse drapery rod

COVE LIGHTING mounted near the ceiling directs light upward.

RECESSED DOWNLIGHTS (can lights) direct a beam of light from the ceiling downward.

WALL WASHERS spread light over a wall from ceiling to floor.

SOFFITT LIGHTING is an enclosed box-like structure with a diffuser at the bottom.

LUMINOUS CEILING PANELS are fluorescent tubes placed under plastic panels.

STRIP LIGHTS are rows of incandescent bulbs.

TRACK LIGHTING is several light fixtures mounted on a metal strip.
