Creating a Research Paper
Presentation transcript:

MLA Format MLA (Modern Language Association) style is most commonly used to write papers and cite sources within the liberal arts and humanities.

Paper Format Double-space Times New Roman Font 12 pt Size Font 1 inch margin on all sides Indent the first line of each paragraph Writer’s last name and page number in upper right hand corner on all pages Example: Smith 1 Work Cited on different and last page than text.

This is the Name of my Paper Paper Format: 1st page Upper left corner of 1st page list- Name Instructor’s name Course Date Center the paper’s title Do not underline, italicize, or bold Example: This is the Name of my Paper

In- text Citation When using information and ideas from a source, the source must be CITED!!! Quotation- the exact words from a text/ source Paraphrase- a restatement of a text/ source MLA Citation uses the author-page method in parenthesis: (Author page#) Example: (Hansberry 15) If the author is mentioned then only the page # is needed. Example: Lorraine Hansberry writes “……” (15). The complete reference should appear on your Works Cited page. Hansberry, Lorraine. A Raisin in the Sun. New York: Random House, 1958. Print.

In-text Citation Example Quotations - Opinion Ruth asks Walter, “What kind of eggs you want?” ,yet when he responds “Not scrambled”, she disregards his request (Hansberry 26). This shows that Ruth is not concerned with Walter’s wants, while Walter is in need of the unusual. Hansberry shows Walter’s discontent when she writes “damn all the eggs that ever was” (28). Work Cited Hansberry, Lorraine. A Raisin in the Sun. New York: Random House, 1958. Print.

In-text Citation- Cont… Sources with No Known Author- use the title of the text. (“Impact of Global Warming” 6) “The Impact of Global Warming in North America.” GLOBAL WARMING: Early Signs. 1999. Web. 23 Mar. 2009. Authors with Same Last Names- provide both authors' first initials (or even the authors' full name if different authors share initials) in your citation (A. Miller 12) (R. Miller 45)

In-text Citation- Cont… Multiple Works by the Same Author- include the author’s name and a shortened title for the particular work from which you are quoting to distinguish it from the others. Shortened title includes the first one or two words from the title (Hughes, “A Dream Deferred” stanza 3 line 6) (Hughes, “Let America” stanza 5 line 2)

Work Cited Alphabetized list of work that is cited in the text. Entries are listed alphabetically by the author's last name or title (if author’s name is not present) Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper. Label the page Works Cited and center the words Works Cited at the top of the page. Work Cited Double space all citations. Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations five spaces so that you create a hanging indent.
