Kingdom Animalia

What are the characteristics of all of the members of Kingdom Animalia? Eukaryotic cells Multicellular Are Ingestive heterotrophs – must actively take food into their bodies Lack a cell wall and chloroplasts

Two divisions of Animals Invertebrates – lack internal segmented backbone Sponges Jellies, coral, anemones Worms Round, Flat and Segmented (Earthworm) Mollusks – clams, oysters, scallops Arthropods Spiders Crustaceans Insects Echinoderms – starfish, urchins Chordates – flexible support rod in back Vertebrates – have segmented backbone Fish Amphibians – frogs and salamanders Reptiles – turtles, snakes, lizards Birds Mammals

Body Symmetry Refers to how an object is cut across a central axis. Bilateral symmetry – cut only 1 way into 2 equal parts Radial symmetry – arranged in circle around central axis

The Earthworm Earthworms are segmented worms due to the repeated sections in the organism. Hermaphroditic – having both sexes Complete digestive system – mouth to anus 5 hearts linking the dorsal and ventral blood vessels in a continuous loop = Closed circulatory system just like us Nerve cord running along its belly (ventral side)

External Earthworm

Hearts Clitellum Intestine Blood Vessels Crop Gizzard Mouth
