Reading QVRCP The method: Take the text and make notes in the margins (for photocopies) or on a separate piece of paper (for books). The notes should, as a minimum, include the following: A Question Three Vocabulary words A Reaction A Connection A Prediction

Question Question: As you read the text, ask a question about it. -For example, why did the author choose to focus on this issue? -What is the author’s background? -Has the author considered another theoretical framework?

Vocabulary Vocabulary words: Underline or record three vocabulary words you don’t know. Make suggestions of the meanings of your chosen words based on the rest of the sentence or paragraph. Or if there are no words you don’t already understand, choose three words that you particularly like, and which encapsulate the meaning of the text.

Reaction Reaction What is your personal or emotional reaction to the text? -Is it interesting, boring, shocking, engaging, fascinating, disturbing, or troubling?

Connection Connection: Make a connection with something you have read previously. -What does the text remind you of? -If you can’t think of a connection with something you have read, how about something you have heard before, or a personal experience?

Prediction: Prediction:If you are reading a chapter from a book, what might come next? -If you are reading an article, what might an article written in reply say about it? -If you are reading about a theory, what might other theorists say in reply? -Or how do you predict other people (students; tutors; other authors; the general public) might react to the text? What might they say?
