Calling on God Pastor Nathan Weller August 20, 2017 Series: Face Time

1 When Ahab got home, he told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including the way he had killed all the prophets of Baal. 2 So Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: “May the gods strike me and even kill me if by this time tomorrow I have not killed you just as you killed them.” 3 Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. 4 Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have... (cont’d) 1st Kings 19.1-9 NLT

1st Kings 19.1-9 NLT ...had enough, Lord,” he said. (cont’d) “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.” 5 Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” 6 He looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more... (cont’d) 1st Kings 19.1-9 NLT

...or the journey ahead will be too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. 9 There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. 1st Kings 19.1-9 NLT

The journey of faith is impossible without daily reliance upon God.

In all honesty, cry out to God.

“I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.” 1st Kings 19.1-4 NLT

“I have been accustomed to call this book not inappropriately, ‘An anatomy of all parts of the soul’ for there is not an emotion of which anyone can be conscious that is not here represented as in a mirror. Or rather, the Holy Spirit has brought to life all the grief, sorrows, fears, doubts, hopes, cares, perplexities, in short, all the distracting emotions with which our minds are agitated….Here the prophets themselves, seeing they are presented to us as speaking to God, and laying open all their innermost thoughts and affections, call, or rather draw, each of us to the examination of ourselves.” -John Calvin-

5 Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” 6 He looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. 1st Kings 19.5-8 NLT

Daily we must feast on God’s Word

Ezekiel 3.1-4 NLT 1 The voice said to me, “Son of man, eat what I am giving you—eat this scroll! Then go and give its message to the people of Israel.” 2 So I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll. 3 “Fill your stomach with this,” he said. And when I ate it, it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth. 4 Then he said, “Son of man, go to the people of Israel and give them my messages. Ezekiel 3.1-4 NLT

Jeremiah 15.6 ESV Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. Jeremiah 15.6 ESV

9 So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll 9 So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll. And he said to me, “Take and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it my stomach was made bitter. Revelation 10.9-10 ESV

Deuteronomy 8.3 ESV And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Deuteronomy 8.3 ESV

"The story of the manna gathered and set aside by the Hebrews is deeply significant. It so happened that the manna rotted when it was kept. And perhaps this means that all spiritual reading which is not consumed—by prayer and by works--ends by causing a sort of rotting inside of us. You die with a heart full of fine sayings and a perfectly empty heart." -Julian Green-

Don’t forget to rest

1st Kings 19.5, 9 NLT 5 Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” 9 There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. 1st Kings 19.5, 9 NLT

When you get alone with God and begin to pray, you learn your insignificance. You see how big and powerful God is, and suddenly, the whole of your life becomes worship and praise.” -C John Miller-
