The Rise of Terror

Hadith A collection of traditions containing sayings of the prophet Muhammad that, with accounts of his daily practice (the Sunna), constitute the major source of guidance for Muslims apart from the Qur’an.

Sharia Law An idea that states that the laws of man and the laws of God should be the same. If a country lives under Sharia Law, then the laws of the land come directly from the Qur’an and the Hadith. Would this be a good thing or a bad thing?

Fundamentalist v Extremist a person who believes in the strict, literal interpretation of scripture in a religion. =Fundamentalist a person who holds extreme or fanatical political or religious views, especially one who resorts to or advocates extreme action. =Extremist Are they the same?

Jihad “Striving” or the Struggle. Internal or External Internal=Relationship between you and God and your struggle to be better. External=defending Islam with the mouth, pen, or the sword.

Terrorism the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

So… Fundamentalist Extremist Muslims believe that Sharia Law is the only law, and that God wants the whole world to live under the laws of the Qur’an and the Hadith. In order to achieve that, they have to execute jihad against the enemies of Islam. They also believe that the most effective way to do this is through terrorism.

Major Terrorist Groups Mujahideen – warriors fighting to defend fellow Muslims. Also known as guerrilla fighters in Islamic countries, especially those who are fighting against non-Muslim forces.

Al Qaeda Origin was to combat the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan Funded and founded by Osama Bin Laden in the eighties Osama Bin Landen responsible for 9/11 Moved to Saudi Arabia after Soviets withdrew Drive Americans and American influence out of all Muslim nations, especially Saudi Arabia, destroy Israel, and end pro-Western dictatorships around the Middle East Unite all Muslims and establish, by force if necessary, an Islamic nation adhering to the rule of the first Caliphs

Taliban Emerged in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of Soviet troops Founded by Mullah Mohammed Omar Controlled nearly 90% of Afghanistan in 1998. Driven from power by a United States led coalition after 9/11 Promised peace, security, and their version of Sharia Law while in power Support public executions of convicted murderers and adulterers. Amputations of those found guilty of theft Ban television, music, movies, and disapprove of girls ten and over attending school
