NCDPI Alignment and Support The next several slides will provide an overview of the Arts Education Essential Standards. If you attended the meeting in October or through any of the professional associations, some of this content will be a review. However, if you were not able to attend any of these sessions, these next slides will help you to become acquainted with the purpose, content, and organization of the new standards. In-depth training will be provided through NCDPI’s blended professional development, which includes Summer Leadership institutes, on-line learning modules, an Implementation guide for LEA teams that attend the summer institutes, and support materials available through the instructional toolkits for each content area.

Arts Education Graphic Organizers Can be used: to assist students with their understanding standards in Arts Education and General Education Classrooms in Multiple Grades and Disciplines to address a Comprehensive Arts Education (arts education, arts integration, arts exposure) Use: to provide a springboard from which teachers may modify, adapt, or create new organizers to assist students with their understanding of the North Carolina Arts Education Essential Standards. The organizers are designed for arts education and general education use, and ideally in multi-disciplinary efforts. May address a Comprehensive Arts Education (as defined in S66).

Arts Education Graphic Organizers History and Culture Early/Upper Elementary and Middle Grades – the Arts and Social Studies High School – Cultural Influences The Creative Process The Elements (Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts) The first three graphic organizers provide links with the arts to history and culture. These samples may be used with various art forms and across content areas. Three completed examples are included for the first two organizers – early elementary dance, upper elementary visual art, and middle grades music. Ideally, they will be used by both arts education and general education teachers in multi-disciplinary instruction to help students transfer and apply their understanding across the curriculum. The fourth organizer was designed for use at the high school level and focuses on helping students see connections through the lens of cultural influences. The last two graphic organizers may be used in multiple grade levels and disciplines to make connections with the creative process and to build conceptual understanding of the elements within each of the arts education disciplines: dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts.

Developing, Proficient, Accomplished, Distinguished: Determining where we are and where we want to go… Tying school self assessment, level of engagement with teacher evaluation terminology and our Vision, Voice and Visibility framework.

Criteria for Levels of Engagement Ongoing A+ Professional Development Teacher Engagement Principal Leadership Distinguished The level of engagement of our A+ schools is directly related to three criteria: ongoing professional development, principal leadership and teacher engagement. OK’s recent research confirmed these criteria.

VISION, VOICE & VISIBILITY VISION: How is A+ practice and philosophy part of your school’s mission/vision, your overall school plan, your SIP, your schedule, your daily decision making, your celebrating? VOICE: How well-versed is your faculty on what A+ is and how it impacts learning at your school? How strongly does your school speak to the value of the arts? Do your parents, students, central office staff and community know that you are an A+ school and what that means? VISIBILITY: Is the A+ logo on the homepage of your school website with a link to the A+ website? Does your website share your A+ history and why you are A+? Does your school LOOK like it values the arts? Are the A+ Essentials on display at your school? These three V’s continue to help us assess school needs, determine level of engagement and commitment and identify next steps in A+ implementation. If you aren’t talking about these at your school, you should be!

SCHOOL VISION How present is A+ in your school mission and vision? Developing: We are trying to figure out how A+ connects with what we already do. Proficient: A+ is a part of our mission and vision. Accomplished: A+ is a prominent and important part of our mission and vision. Distinguished: A+ is woven seamlessly into the day to day business of educating our students. ALL A+ SCHOOLS SHOULD BE SELF ASSESSING!! Continuing the Conversation: Where is our school in its implementation of the A+ Essentials? Where do we need to grow and develop? Vision, Voice and Visibility: What is our commitment as a member of the A+ Schools Network? 2012-13 Needs Assessment: What are our most pressing needs? How are we supporting new staff? Where do we go from here? All schools should be self assessing based on the 3 Vs and determining their next steps for growth!

ONGOING A+ PD FUNDING IS AVAILABLE!! For quality PD, need to schedule at least 1 month in advance. All A+ Schools that have committed to remaining A+ need to plan for on-going A+ staff development. Full staff PD; art or subject specific PD; new curriculum support; collaboration and teambuilding; coaching; demonstration teaching; school-to-school Networking; facilitated A+ School visits; think out-of-the-box Don’t forget your new teachers! Do you have an A+ mentoring plan in place? Site Visits from A+ Many schools attended the summer A+ PD last summer and/or have had A+ PD on site this school year. In particular, BHESA, Oaks Road, STARS, Community Charter and Hill MS can speak to the benefit of on-going PD during the school year.

SCHEDULE YOUR SUMMER A+ PD NOW JULY 16TH – 20TH JULY 29TH – AUGUST 3RD AUGUST 12TH – 17TH We have set aside 3 weeks for A+ PD this summer, hoping that we will be able to cluster schools together for maximum networking opportunities. We will have other dates available as well for those who can’t fit within these three weeks.

SPOTLIGHT ON A+ ARTS INTEGRATION http://youtu.be/LUMrTKPLJXA We have added in a new component to our Webinars that we are calling “Spotlight on Arts Integration”. Each time, we will invite one or more schools to share what they are doing at their school. Today, we are spotlighting Rochelle MS. Rochelle Middle School is one of our newest A+ schools, just in their 2nd year of implementation. But they are doing some great work beginning to document what they are doing at their school. Remembering that we tell every new school that implementation comes in small steps, this video is a great example of a math teacher taking those steps. In the video she blends together her math standards with some of the elements of visual arts to create a meaningful learning experience for her students. I’ve asked Robert Dotson, A+ coordinator and Assistant Principal at Rochelle, to talk a little bit about his process for documenting integrated lessons – how he’s taping, what programs he’s using to edit and how and where he’s sharing his documentation.
