What’s your experience? Bridging the GPS Gap Links between school-based GPS and subject training programmes What’s your experience?

Key Principles: Organisation Communication Participation

Organisation: Opportunities in school Provide school calendar for trainees so they have all the key dates. Comprehensive Induction timetable Tutor group outside subject area Look at what else is going on: Citizenship lessons, Health lessons / tutorials, Information, Advice and Guidance, Citizenship, Assemblies, Interventions, ESOL classes, extra-curricular clubs, transition meetings, options, parental engagement opportunities, exam provision, access arrangements, revision classes, shadowing support staff eg. admin staff, premises.

Communication GIVE mentors a copy of the Professional studies programme TELL them which lesson(s) to keep free on trainee timetables PROMPT mentors to follow-up key sessions in their weekly meetings REMIND mentors of other opportunities in school for trainees to work on the GPS PROVIDE additional support for mentors to ensure trainees get the most out of GPS opportunities. Eg. parents’ evenings. CREATE a sense of TEAM between the 3 parties:– eg. Induction lunch

Eg. Communication about Parents’ evenings: Example email: If trainees are taking parents’ evening, please make sure you are sitting with them and that you brief them about: Preparing comments beforehand Having relevant data to hand Keeping to time The right tone and approach to take with parents eg. ask if they have any comments or questions to begin with Keep it as positive as possible – think:  WWW – what works well (what’s she’s doing well) Explain without using jargon if she is making progress Identify 1 target – EBI – even better if . . .

Participation: Consortium across schools The Leicester City Consortium is a group of schools who organise the programme for the wider professional standards for all the ITT students on placement in their establishments. We aim to cover most of the general professional topics on the programme.
