Teacher Tenure Tenure: a contractual right of a teacher or professor not to have his or her position terminated without just cause. Basically, tenure is job security. It prevents an employer from firing you for reasons that aren’t job related. (i.e. personal grudge, trouble maker, etc.)

Teacher Tenure Before Massachusetts introduced teacher tenure in 1886, women were sometimes fired for getting married, becoming pregnant, wearing pants, or being out too late in the evenings. In 2005, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to pass a law extending the time it takes to earn tenure from 2 to 5 years. It failed.

Teacher Tenure In a June 2009 study, 86% of school administrators said “they do not always pursue dismissal” of poorly performing teachers because of the costly and time consuming process. In June 2010, New York City housed approximately 600 tenured teachers “accused of incompetence and wrongdoing” in a room to do nothing and collect their full salaries.

Teacher Tenure In Chicago, tenure is earned after 3 consecutive years of excellent ratings. The requirements to earn tenure varies from state to state. Tenure is a controversial issue! What are the benefits of tenure? How can tenure be a bad thing?
