The Respiratory System Chapter 16, Lesson 1

Vocabulary Breathing Respiratory system Pharynx Epiglottis Larynx Vocal cords Trachea Bronchi Lungs alveoli gas exchange diaphragm inhalation exhalation

Breathing The movement of air into and out of the lungs

Respiratory System A system of organs that brings oxygen into your body.

Pharynx A tubelike passageway at the top of the throat that receives air, food and liquids from the mouth or nose.

epiglottis A flap of tissue at the lower end of the pharynx that keeps food and liquids from entering the rest of the respiratory system.

larynx A triangle-shaped area through which air passes from the pharynx; also known as the voice box

Vocal cords Two thick folds of tissue in the larynx that vibrate and make sounds as air passes over them

Trachea A tube that is held open by c-shaped rings of cartilage

Bronchi Two narrow tubes that branch off of the trachea and lead into the lungs Singular: bronchus

Bronchioles (THIS WAS LEFT OFF OF YOUR LIST BUT YOU NEED TO KNOW IT) Smaller tubes that branch off of the bronchi

alveoli Microscopic sacs, or pouches, at the end of the bronchioles where gas exchange occurs

Lungs The main organs of the respiratory system made of sponge-like tissue

gas exchange The process in which oxygen from the alveoli moves into the blood, and carbon dioxide from the blood moves into the alveoli

diaphragm The large muscle below the lungs that contracts and relaxes and moves air in and out of the lungs

inhalation The process in which air rushes into the lungs when the air pressure in the chest cavity is reduced

exhalation The process in which air rushes out of the lungs when the air pressure in the chest cavity increases
