PP Lessons Term 3, 2016 Lesson 9, Week 8

Lesson 9 Last lesson we looked at Optimistic thinking (helpful thoughts)and looked at ways to be positive. Slide 2 Revise last week’s lesson on Optimistic thinking Optimism is expecting the best out of every situation. ‘Looking on the Bright Side’ means believing that things will work out or improve

This Week WALT: understand that unhelpful thinking makes you feel sad Slide 3 Read the WALT

Unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset The way you think about what happens to you leads to happy or sad feelings. If you use helpful thinking (Optimistic thoughts) you will have a happier feelings and feel better. Slide 4 The way you think about what happens to you determines your feelings not the thing itself. If you use helpful thinking (Optimistic thoughts) you will have a happier feelings and feel better. Helpful thinking means not jumping to conclusions, checking your facts and not believing the worst pictures.

Let’s look at different scenarios Let’s look at different scenarios. Discuss which thoughts are helpful/unhelpful Mary doesn’t get invited to a friend’s party Thoughts: I will always be left out and never get to go to a party or I didn’t get invited to Mary’s party, but I have lots of other friends so there will be lots of parties this year. Mary might invite me next time. Help the students to understand that the unhelpful thought is forever (permanent), whereas the helpful thought is not forever (temporary)

Helpful (Optimistic) or Unhelpful (Pessimistic) I was mean to my friend Katie in the playground Thoughts: Katie will never play with me again or If I say sorry for what I did and Katie will see that I was just in a silly mood that day Discuss permanent and temporary thinking

View the story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6aYYiyQUmY Owl Babies by Martin Waddell Discuss Unhelpful Thoughts(Pessimistic) and Helpful Thoughts (Optimistic) When the baby owls woke up what did they notice? At first what sort of thoughts did Sarah and Percy have? Helpful or unhelpful? Explain how you know. Did their thinking change? How did their thinking make them feel? What thoughts did Bill have throughout the story? Helpful or unhelpful? How did these thoughts make Bill feel? Did his thoughts ever change? How did these thoughts make Sarah and Percy feel? Slide 7 Video Owl Babies by Martin Waddell – Maybe watch the video twice. First time whole way through so the students get an understanding of the whole story. Watch it a second time, pausing at intervals to discuss the helpful thoughts of Sarah and Percy and the unhelpful thoughts of Bill. Discuss how Sarah and Percy’s helpful thoughts made them feel safe, as they were being positive about their mother’s return. They were thinking about the good reasons why Mother Owl had to leave. They were also looking forward to the food she might bring to them. Discuss how Bill’s thoughts were always very unhelpful? They didn’t change at all throughout the story. How did Bill feel for most of the story? Why? How did Bill’s unhelpful thoughts change Percy and Sarah’s positive thinking? How did Percy and Sarah’s feelings start to change?

When bad things happen always remember Optimistic Thinking When bad things happen always remember It will get better. I can learn from this. Slide 8 In summary: Optimistic thinking Discuss When bad things happen and the characteristics Fold a piece of paper in half. On one side Students could draw a picture of a situation that made them feel sad or angry and describe it. On the other side the students draw another picture to show how their helpful thoughts (optimistic thinking) changed their sad feeing to a happy feeling. Helpful thoughts will help turn sad feelings into happy feelings

Today we have learnt that unhelpful thinking can make you feel more upset learnt that helpful thinking changes how we feel; Sad or worrying situations do get better. They don’t stay the same forever. We learn how to make sad situations better by thinking about our thoughts Annie- Tomorrow Slide 9 Seen that unhelpful thinking can make you feel more upset Looked at our thinking and understand that it has these characteristics temporary or permanent specific or global because of others or because of me Looked at the Brightside (Optimistic) thinking Versus Unhelpful thoughts (Pessimistic) thinking Watch- Annie- Tomorrow Discuss that this is an example of temporary. Things may be better tomorrow.
