Presentation transcript:

2.9 Jesus’ Argument with the Sadducees Describe the story told by the Sadducees Explain what is meant by Moses’ teaching on the resurrection Express your views about how that might have led to conflict Explain the significance of this for Christians today.

2.9 Jesus’ Argument with the Sadducees Read page 50 and the ‘blue box’ Sadducee Fact File – write this out Rich and happy to collaborate with the Romans to keep their power and position. All their teaching came from the law of Moses (the Torah). They rejected the oral law which explained Moses’ the Torah and the teaching of the prophets. They did not believe in the Messiah They did not believe in life after death, that is why they are Sadd U Cee.

2.9 Jesus’ Argument with the Sadducees Read page 51 Why might this have led to conflict? (8) Why is Jesus’ argument with the Sadducees important for Christians today? (8) Why does Jesus use an example of Moses to show that there is a life after death? Why do you think the Pharisees and Sadducees wanted Jesus to be killed? Do you think Jesus deliberately caused conflict with the leaders? Was it the other way around? or nobody’s fault?

Write this out Why did this argument cause conflict for Jesus? Humiliated them in front of a crowd They were looking for conflict. The question was unanswerable Jesus proves them wrong using their own law against them It would have caused conflict with the Pharisees who thought that the resurrection was not until the end of time

Look at the exam question on the next slide and write out the question and possible answers.

There is a life after death The resurrection is possible We will not be married after death. “Till death us do part”
