Key Deliberations & Way Forward: So what next?

Key Deliberations Session 1: Setting the Scene: Megatrends and Recap of last Year´s Key Messages ReNAPRI´s approach to shaping the future of Africa’s food system is based on anticipation of changes and provision of information to public and private sector stakeholders in order to inform their strategic investments Session 2: Unfolding Agricultural Transformation in Africa Rise of emergent investor farmers and big buyers They here to stay They are changing grain markets Their further is yet to be determined…! Session 3: Public and private sector response Policy environment matters when navigating climate change For example - collaboration to remove trade restrictions Strengthen early warning systems

Key Deliberations Session 4: Market –oriented & sustainable intensification strategies for Addressing Climate chance Extreme weather events are here to stay (climate change?) The extreme weather impact crop revenue and livelihoods poses risks to trading systems and aggravates the effects of bad policies, trade bans, lack of adequate infrastructure! Session 5: Wrap up Key messages were presented

Key Deliberations Session 6: Global outlook and scenarios Slow down in biofuels and china demand  global commodity prices down back to the long run trend Growing net trade deficits in key commodities of SSA Opportunity for Africa but need to increase productivity is important for growth in SSA  appropriate policy action is key Session 7: ReNAPRI Regional & Scenarios Consistent with Global Outlook, but prices in Africa remain higher ReNAPRI model can be used to simulated various scenarios related to key uncertainties including exchange rate risk, climate change, etc

Way Forward ReNAPRI: Keep up the good work But… How change comes about? ReNAPRI needs to focus on action as we go forward Need to innovate to better communicate policy message to farmers, private sector and policy makers. Social Vs Commercial policy: Show the losses associated with social policy crowding out commercial policy So need to continue to improve data systems

Thank You
