Bell Ringer – 4/21/08 What was “Progressivism” and during what era did it dominate American politics? Provide 3 examples of urbanization problems that Progressives would want to fix How were women connected to the Progressive Movement?

Women & Progressivism Many middle-class women were ready for progress Women enrolled in college to study medicine, psychology, & sociology The Progressive Party supported women’s suffrage (right to vote) and an end to child labor

Progressive Goals Clean up cities & streets Plan cities to include sidewalks and parks Ban or limit alcohol consumption Increase education Decrease sickness & disease Decrease discrimination

What were the Progressive issues? Dangerous workplaces – wanted safer conditions and shorter work days (8 hour day) Election reforms – average Americans should have better representation Science, technology, education – believed students should follow a curriculum closely tied to real-life activities
