Class Starter I recently read an article saying that the federal government is going to start regulating the amount of salt put into food in restaurants and stores. Is it appropriate for the government to regulate what is put in or on the food of the American people?
The Jungle Quote “There would be meat that had tumbled out on the floor, in the dirt and sawdust, where the workers had tramped and spit uncounted billions of consumption [tuberculosis] germs. There would be meat stored in great piles in rooms; . . . and thousands of rats would race about on it. . . . A man could run his hand over these piles of meat and sweep off handfuls of the dried dung of rats. These rats were nuisances, and the packers would put poisoned bread out for them; they would die, and then rats, bread, and meat would go into the hoppers together.”
Government Starts to Shape Reforms Square Deal- was Progressive Era reforms that sought to change that Started enacting laws and agencies that would limit the corruption and power of corporations Major expansion in the role and power of the federal government Especially in the prevention of harm to the public welfare as a whole
Progressive Era Businesses The beginning of Trusts Legal bodies created to hold stock/own many other companies Basically companies joining other companies Helped companies to control the markets Seen as un-American and caused poor reputation with the public Up until this point businesses only motive was to make a profit Corporations saw everything as business and competition
