CORE KARES Lesson Plan August 12, 2016 Today our students will review our PBIS matrix and learn about PRIDE points; how they’re earned and how they can be used. Time permitting, run the Jeopardy game in full-screen mo0de (press F5 key) after all questions have been answered. Each student should have a copy of the PBIS Matrix prior to game play. Note that you MUST click the home icon after revealing each answer in order to return to the game board!

What Teachers Need to Know About PRIDE Points! PRIDE points will be placed in teachers’ mail boxes on Monday 8/15  first thing in the morning for immediate distribution. Please ask questions if you need clarity on how the points will work. Just a quick re-cap on how the PRIDE points will work: Students hold onto their PRIDE points (MYP teachers please reinforce strategies on how to keep these safe ex: zipper pocket in notebook). Teachers will be provided 50 pride points every Wednesday @ PD  or in boxes if we are not meeting as a group for PD). We are hoping all teachers will use their 50 points in a week, the minimum to hand out is 25. Only hand out 1 PRIDE point for each desired behavior. When handing out the PRIDE point, tie it to a PBIS Matrix value (Principled/Respectful/Integrity/Do the right thing/Excellence). Even better- tie it to a specific area on the matrix in where the value was shown. Bring ALL redeemed pride points to Wednesday PD (or drop in Mr. Patrick’s mailbox) to turn in for weekly drawing on Friday.

What Teachers Need to Know About PRIDE Points! (continued) Students will redeem their PRIDE points with you if you are a school wide reward provider (ex: Andre computer lab M/W/F). Students will redeem with you if you have created a classroom-specific reward. You may use food for a teacher/classroom specific reward if you abide by the following: It is healthy in nature (no outright candy, soda, energy drinks, chips) AND you are clear on when they can consume it: your classroom, lunch room, before or after school) and that if they consume it anywhere else it will be subject to disposal). You may use electronic use in your classroom as teacher/classroom specific reward if you are explicit with students that it is ONLY your classroom and when you deem appropriate and if they have their electronics out during other times electronic policy will be enforced and if it becomes an issue, we will have to reconsider this reward option. Please also know that if you choose this as an option in your classroom you must properly supervise the electronic use. If you choose this as an option in your class please make the PRIDE point costs 2 PRIDE points in order to create consistency for those using it. Students will also receive PRIDE points from adults on campus other than yourself (monitors/admin/office staff/counselors etc.). Please show your students the remainder of this PowerPoint and have them participate in the activities that it requires. Press the F5 key now to show this in full-screen mode and activate the animations. The next slide isn’t related to PRIDE points, but is an important update for students regarding fighting at school and its consequences. Please focus upon bullet points 3 & 4 specifically!

Important update regarding physical altercations! Students need to understand that they will be going home for a minimum of 3 days for Physical Altercations, Assaults, and Other Aggressions this year. And upon their return from OSS they will spend time in ISI before they can return to classes.

Teachers and students, this lesson was created through the efforts of Student Leadership & Service. The members ask that you give each slide no more than a few minutes. Students, be prepared to write a short reflection about the PBIS matrix and what you have learned about PRIDE at Safford. Please review the PBIS matrix. GO HUSKIES!

Student Leadership & Service PRIDE Presentation

Classroom and Library Always be respectful to your teacher. Wait patiently to be called on. Strive for excellence.

Playground and field Stay on campus. Make good choices. Do the right thing.

Hallways Respect all work on the walls. Keep the hallways clean. Walk on the right side. Honor personal space.

Hallways Respectfully help adults when asked. Help people up if they fall.

Cafeteria Don’t cut in line. Walk in the cafeteria! Use Manners Do not throw food. Use proper voices in cafeteria. Respect all adults.

Bathroom Don’t waste time in bathroom. Report graffiti or other problems. Keep all restrooms clean. Flush toilets at all times. Wash hands!

Bus Always follow all bus procedures. Stay seated at all times. Keep your hands inside the bus. No bullying. Respect people and their personal space.

Assembly Pay attention to the speaker. Be respectful, raise your hand. Wait patiently.

Do the right thing Stand up against bullying Participate in random acts of kindness Demonstrate caring

Here’s how we show Integrity in the Classroom and Library! This is how to demonstrate Excellence during an Assembly! This is what being Respectful in the Hallways looks like! Please click to advance the animations!

How would we demonstrate Excellence while on the Bus?

Now that you have reviewed examples of the Safford Husky PBIS / PRIDE matrix, write a paragraph summarizing about what you have learned about in class today. You may use the PBIS Matrix as reference while writing. Husky PRIDE

PRIDE Points When you consistently demonstrate your Husky PRIDE, you can expect to earn PRIDE points! PRIDE points can be awarded to you anywhere on campus by administrators, teachers, and monitors. SAVE your PRIDE points because they’re valuable and can NOT be replaced!

Here’s a PRIDE Point! Front side: Back side:

Important facts about PRIDE Points Remember, PRIDE Points are like money here on the Safford campus! Store them in a safe place like a zipper pouch in your notebook! They may NOT be altered in any way (for example, whiting out one student’s name and replacing it with another student’s name). If this happens, the PRIDE Point becomes void and you may receive consequences! The PRIDE Points Menu may be changed throughout the school year, so check the posters often! The following slide shows an example of a PRIDE Points menu.

Here’s an example of an old MYP PRIDE Points Menu (we’re working on a new one for you!)
