Presentation transcript:

ELL Assessment and Grading Guidelines for Assessing and Grading ELL Students were created based on the new ELP/English Language Proficiency Standards (available on Connect on English Language Learners site) ELL students Levels 1-3, Emerging and Progressing can receive a grade of ELP instead of a number. Cannot give a 1 or 2 in content areas (this includes Music and PE) without sufficient evidence that it is not a language issue You should only see ELPs and/or 3 and 4s on an ELL report card ELP can be used in the “Behaviors That Promote Learning”section If the “ELP” option is used a comment must be written If ELL students are not at standard, they are graded with the ELP marking and a comment must be used if ELP is listed in the grade box instead of a numbered grade. ELP can be used in academic AND social areas. PE and Music teachers can also use ELP as a grading option for ELL students. They will need a list of ELL students. You do not have to use the ELL shared comments- they are guidelines for you. Feel free to copy and paste them or write your own. *Click on “English Language Learner” it is hyperlinked to the ELL site on connect

Does the student currently demonstrate on-standard or above standard performance in the content area? * *In some cases, teachers may not assess their ELL students on every standard, so teachers can mark “NA”.   NO YES Use the “ELP” drop down option in Skyward instead of giving a score of 1 or 2. This ELP mark means the student is still developing his/her language skills according to the state ELP Standards that can be found at http://www.k12.wa.us/MigrantBilingual/ELD.aspx Use the standard report card grades, giving a 3 or 4 as appropriate. ELP comments that are derived from the ELP standards can be used if a teacher chooses the “ELP” option. These comments can be found on Connect at Elementary Report Cards . Click on “ELL Reading and Writing” then cut and paste the appropriate comment. Any shared or free form comments may be used.

Report Cards- ELP and comments On Skyward, go to My Gradebook

Click on Standards Gradebook

Select student or standard Selecting a content area allows you to grade all students in that one area Selecting a student allows you to grade all areas for that one specific student Now you will see your class list, you can select a specific standard and grade all of your students in that one area or select a specific student to score and grade all areas for one student

When grading, select ELP when applicable This ELP mark means the student is still developing his/her language skills according to the state ELP Standards. ELP is an option for ELL students Levels 1 -3 or Emerging and Progressing students ELP is only for level 1-3 ELL students or Emerging and Progressing students. Do not enter “ELP” for Level 4 or Proficient students on the report cards if they are not meeting standard. As a reminder, students are Levels 1-3 if they enrolled this school year (kinders and any new students)   Level 4 and Proficient students should be graded the same as their general education peers. They are no longer eligible for language development support, just academic support if they are not at grade level.

ELP shared comments When you choose “ELP” instead of a number score, you must write a comment. There are shared comments that are posted on the Elementary Report Card Connect Site. You do not have to use the shared comments, but a comment must be written. The ELPs are a great resource for language to use when writing free form comments. ELL Shared comments are only available for Reading and Writing… if you use ELP for math, science or social studies, you must also add a comment of your own. You have a copy of the shared ELL comments.

How do I find the ELL shared comments? Log onto Connect and click “Intranet”

How do I find the ELL shared comments? Scroll down and select “Teaching and Learning”

How do I find the ELL shared comments? Scroll down and select “Elementary Report Cards”

How do I find the ELL shared comments? Click on “Comment Banks”

How do I find the ELL shared comments? Two options for finding the ELL Shared Comments Option 1 Option 2 Options for finding ELL Shared Comments: ELL Reading & Writing (all of the ELL comments are in once place… they will open in a word document and you can copy and paste them) Click on Reading or Writing and you will find all of the “Shared Comments” and at the bottom you will see the ELL comments.

Option 1 Looking at only ELL comments Copy and paste the comment into the comments section of the report card (there are no more comment codes). You can use any ELL shared comment for your ELL student even if the comment does not correspond with the student’s current ELL level.

Option 2 Look at general shared comments and ELL shared comments for the same subject

Grading for everyday classroom assignments/assessments Communication with parents is KEY Interpreter Language Line What is best for the student? It will be a case by case basis. How will the student feel if he/she always gets 1s and 2s on classroom assignments/assessments? If you only use ELP, will the parents and student be able to see growth? Come up with a plan with parents You can give a 1 or 2 on classroom assessments, but you must use ELP on the report card Classroom assessments should be modified so ELLs can demonstrate content knowledge Read the test out loud, small groups Refer to the accommodation form Example plan with parents: Use ELP if the student received a 1 or 2 and write comments Use 3s and 4s when applicable Keep in mind what is best for your student(s)

Questions? Please contact me with any questions about ELL grading. I will e-mail this PowerPoint to you so you have the information and directions Summary: If your ELL student (Levels 1-3 or Emerging or Progressing) is not meeting standard in an academic area, use “ELP” instead of a number. ELP may also be used in the Behaviors that Promote Learning Section If you enter ELP, you need to enter a comment. ELL shared comments are available for you to use verbatim or as a guideline. You can also use the ELP Standards to help when writing comments.
