Class discussion- formatting What is formatting? Why is formatting considered so important in college? What are the most common types of formats? What are they used for?

MLA Style guide MLA stands for Modern Language Association MLA format is commonly used for humanities and social sciences MLA, like all formats, has strict guidelines for citing sources (discussed in unit 2) For now, focus on the headings, header, and title of MLA

Individual activity – essay checklist Spend a few minutes to review and check off the most important elements of your essay. On a sheet of paper, answer the following: What is the media the is explored in your story? Who are your major characters? Name them. Note: all major characters should have 1+ sentences of description What are your major settings? Identify them. All important settings should have 2+ sentences of description How do you build tension in your story? What is the climax of your story? What did you learn from the experience? Where in your essay do you explain this? What do you think is the best element of your essay thus far? What do you need to improve the most in your essay?

Group activity – wtr draft 3 peer review Exchange essays with one other student not in your ENC class who has not seen your essay draft before. Answer the following questions: What is the media the is explored in your peer’s story? Who are the major characters? Name them. Note: all major characters should have 1+ sentences of description What are the major settings? Identify them. All important settings should have 2+ sentences of description How does the writer build tension in your story? What is the climax of the story? What did the writer learn from the experience? Where in the essay does the writer explain this? What did you like most about the essay? What do you think the writer needs to improve in their essay?

Group activity – essay checklist Exchange your peer review answers and essay checklist with your peer. Compare the two and answer the following questions: What did you and your peer disagree on about the essay? What do you agree on? Note: you may answer these questions on your Individual Activity-Essay Checklist assignment if you choose.
