Identify the rule for getting from x (input) to the y (output). Objective: Identify the rule for getting from x (input) to the y (output).

Question: How do I identify rules?

Answer: Ask yourself “Is my number getting larger or smaller when I move from the x to the y?” Larger – How can I make a number bigger? Smaller – How can I make a number smaller?

Larger – Add or multiply Smaller – Subtract or divide Answer: Larger – Add or multiply Smaller – Subtract or divide

What do I do if that does not work? This means that it isn’t a one step rule Now you need to try two step rules! To get larger - Start by multiplying by 2 and then add or subtract to get to the number. See if that rule work for the next input/output. If not, move to multiplying by 3, 4, 5….

What do I do if that does not work? To get smaller - Start by dividing by 2 (same as multiplying by ½) and then add or subtract to get to the number. See if that rule work for the next input/output. If not, move to dividing by 3, 4, 5….
