Cippenham Infant School Maths Workshop 2016 Cippenham Infant School
Teaching Maths Foundation Stage – Early Years Outcomes Key Stage One (Year 1 and 2) – The National Curriculum 2014
Number/Shape, Space and Measures Foundation Stage Number/Shape, Space and Measures Children are expected to reach the Early Learning Goal (ELG) by the end of Foundation Stage. Children are assessed against the criteria and judged to be: ‘Emerging’ – Still working towards the ELG ‘Expected’ – Have met all the criteria of the ELG ‘Exceeding’ - Are working beyond the criteria in the ELG
Number/Shape, Space and Measures Foundation Stage Number/Shape, Space and Measures Early learning goal – numbers Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. Early learning goal – shape, space and measures Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.
Key Stage One - Year 1 and 2 Mathematics Year Two –New National Curriculum 2014 Children are assessed using teacher assessment, which takes into account classwork, KS1 assessment results and homework. Children will be assessed as: working towards the expected standard working at the expected standard working at greater depth within the expected standard Year One – New National Curriculum 2014 Children are assessed to be meeting expected criteria for their age group. At Cippenham Infant School, we use a RAGBY form of assessment. By the end of year one, children should be ‘GOT IT’ Children’s RAGBY sheets are kept in their Maths books. Please ask your child’s teacher during parents evening if you would like to see their RAGBY assessment sheet.

Maths Long Term Plan 2016/2017
Cippenham Infant School Calculations Policy Lets take a look at addition and subtraction!
Practical Methods Addition/Subtraction Everyday objects Counters Number track and number line. “Grab and chin it!” Practical methods are best used when adding/subtracting single digit numbers, when answers do not go beyond 20. A 100 square is used to add 2 digit numbers, when children are developing their understanding of place value. Children need to know ‘2’ in 23 is worth 20!
Written Methods Children need to understand partitioning to add/subtract 2 digit numbers. 25 = 20 + 5 25 = 10 + 10 + 5 25 = 10 + 9 + 6 25 = 19 + 6 Count on in tens and ones 23 + 12 = 23 + 10 + 2 Or 36 + 53 = 36 + 50 + 3 = 86 + 3 = 89 Column Method (no carrying) Partitioning and place value to add/subtract 12 + 23 = 10 + 2 + 20 + 3 = 30 + 5 = 35 37 – 12 = 37 – 10 = 27 27 – 2 = 25
Cippenham Infant School Calculations Policy Lets take a look at multiplication and division!
Practical Methods Multiplication/Division Counting repeated groups… 2+2+2+2 = 8 4 lots of 2 4 x 2 = Sharing into equal groups 6 apple shared into 3 equal groups. How many in each group? 6÷3=2 Pictorial methods - Arrays Three rows of 2… 3 lots of 2 3 x 2
Arrays 5 X 3 = Can you draw the array for 5X3=
Arrays Can you write the sum for this array?
Arrays There are 4 slices of cheese in each packet. How many slices of cheese are there in 3 packets? Can you do the array and sum for this worded question?
Using and Applying The most important step for the children is to apply their knowledge in real life situations. When the children are asked questions they have lots of things to think about… What can you do check your answer is right? What are the important numbers? ? What are the important words? What do you need to do to work out the answer? How do you know? There are 3 buttons in a bag. I have 5 bags. How many buttons altogether? I have 10 grapes on my plate, my naughty brother ate 3! How many do I have left? Bread costs 35p and milk costs 15p. How much do I spend altogether? There are12 chocolates and 3 children. If I share the chocolates equally, how many will they each have? How could the children solve these problems? What calculation would they use?
Year Two tests In the summer term, year two will sit two maths tests; Arithmetic (25 questions) Reasoning (31 questions) They will have to complete these tests during a quiet lesson with no added pressure. Arithmetic test will take approximately 20 minutes but is not strictly timed. Reasoning test will take approximately 35 minutes but is not strictly timed.

Reasoning
Homework Year 1 and 2 get a sheet of homework every week. This is set from their maths teacher and relates to what they have been learning that week. Foundation Stage will start after Christmas.
