Details: In 1825, Richard Henry Dana, Jr. joined the crew of the Pilgrim sailing from Boston Harbor to Alta California. This was when California was still a part of Mexico! In his famous memoir, Two Years Before the Mast (which E4/5 will be reading this year), Dana described in detail what it was like to live and work as a sailor aboard a merchant vessel and to trade with the people of Alta California. The Pilgrim currently docked at Dana Point’s Harbor is a replica of the original Pilgrim. According to the website, students and families will “Sing sea chanteys, listen to nautical lore, [and] help raise sail” as they are led by a team of docents dressed in period costumes. What do I do?
