Pathways Power Performance Anson high school Youth Career Connect stem academy wadesboro, nc Career Focus – Career Development THE FUTURE STARTS NOW!

Pathway Powers Performance Rationale: The Career Pathway becomes a powerful element in engaging student interest and charging up student performance.

Pathway Powers Performance PATHWAY provides the connection to careers and student interest and passion POWER then naturally emanates from students who become increasingly connected to rigorous curriculum that connects to their futures. With that empowerment growing within them, students step up and care about . . . PERFORMANCE , leading to higher grades, earning industry recognized credentials such as MOS, and certificates and college credits that stack into high demand future career skills.

YCC Program Design based on Connections, Relationships, and Scaffolding to Credentials CAREER PATHWAYS offered at ANSON YCC STEM ACADEMY Engineering & Adv. Manufacturing Information Technologies Medical & Biomedical Sciences Project Lead the Way courses (4) + MOS 1 & MOS 2 NC IT courses: MOS 1, MOS 2, Digital Media Project Lead the Way courses (3 or 4) + MOS 1 & MOS 2 Community College Courses in a specific certificate Community College Courses in a special certificate WorkSite Visits Job Sampling Internship Mentoring Our design is based on connecting students to careers – sparking early success to increase confidence – and stacking in challenge with high school and community college classes that further increase competence. As student passion for career competence increases, likewise, so does performance in all subject and career areas. See booklet handout.

Pathway Powers Performance: 1 Credential Changes Vision of the Future Community of systemic poverty and struggling economy – breeds feelings of helplessness and hopelessness – IMPACTS STUDENT PERFORMANCE. Why try? Career PATHWAYS connect students to interest, passion, natural abilities . . . Success in pathway courses POWERS improved performance in all coursework – and student willingness to step up to the challenge of credentialing and postsecondary study. PERFORMANCE result: CREDENTIALS that open career doors.

Credentials = Employability for Students 91% of hiring managers consider employee certification as a criterion for hiring1 81% of hiring managers feel that certified individuals perform better1 79% of hiring managers feel that certified individuals are more efficient1 89%of supervisors say that Microsoft Office certified employees are more proficient users of Microsoft Office programs3 -It’s truly a global marketplace, especially in the IT world. If you don’t have a certification that validates you have the needed skills, you’re at a significant disadvantage. "Bill Doherty, @ONE Project, College System of California 50%of individuals believe obtaining a certification makes them more marketable2 Sources: 1 MCP Program Satisfaction Study 2010 2 Intrepid Survey 3 Certiport Research 2009

EXAMPLE: The POWER of a CREDENTIAL Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) is a premier industry-recognized certification that provides validation of students’ knowledge, skills and abilities relating to use of Microsoft Office applications. This credential spans industries, claiming value in all of our H-1B pathways. Local Business Partners have expressed amazement at our students’ proficiency – and are offering spots for them to do short-term work stints and internships – in advanced manufacturing, engineering, banking, education, government – using their MOS skills.

Microsoft Skills Make a Difference It is not enough merely to understand which occupations will be high growth and high salary; today's educators must impart the skills that will be required for careers in those occupations, too. To determine those skills, IDC examined 14.6 million job postings between April and September 2013 from 25,000 job boards and staffing companies' corporate Web sites. . . . The only software package called out within the top 20 skills across high growth/high salary was Microsoft Office, ranking #2 in top skills. Source: IDC, based on WANTED Analytics and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, October 2013 ALL Anson YCC students take MOS I as 9th graders; 80% of 10th graders take MOS II, not just our I.T. Pathway students.

POWER of the CREDENTIAL We make earning credentials VISIBLE. Industry Partners see the “Wall of Names” when they visit, and they are impressed – and tell the students that they are. This POWER propels students who were not convinced of the value of PERFORMANCE to achieve more and focus on the PATHWAY they desire. Fall 2015 Spring 2016

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE ON THE POWER OF EARNING CREDENTIALS Do you feel that MOS certification will help you in school and the business world? STUDENT PERSPECTIVE ON THE POWER OF EARNING CREDENTIALS (and career skills) “Yes. It will benefit me by giving me the knowledge of how to use Office 2013 professionally. This class gives you a head start on what you will need to know for your job and school. Technology is everywhere – and now I am confident in how to use it well.” Olivia-9th grade

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE ON THE POWER OF EARNING CREDENTIALS How did you feel about the MOS class in the beginning and how do you feel about it now? STUDENT PERSPECTIVE ON THE POWER OF EARNING CREDENTIALS (and career skills) “At first, I was skeptical as to why I needed to learn Excel and Access. I’ll be learning lots of computer software and packages in my college courses, so why focus on Microsoft? Eventually, though, I realized how important it was once my sister informed me that they use it a lot at her current I.T. job. So earning certification now, as a sophomore in high school, really puts me ahead in my career.” My-10th grade
