Violence and Gore in the Vampire Genre By Alex, Amanda, Lara & Mark

Bram Stokers Dracula (1992) The level of violence and gore in Bram Stokers Dracula is very high because at the start of the movie, there is a very dramatic fight scene, in which peoples heads get cut off. The violence and gore continues throughout the movie, for example when Dracula has blood dripping from his mouth after drinking blood. This version of Dracula has a lot more violence and gore compared to the earlier versions of Vampire movies, such as Nosferatu (1922) and Dracula (1931). This could be because of how society has become more accustomed to having more violence in horror movies.

Let the Right One In (2008) The level of violence and gore in Let the Right One In is higher than in Dracula. This is shown when Eli, the Vampire, takes blood from people in order to quench her thirst. She does this in a very violent way and this creates a lot of gore. The violence and gore is also shown when Eli’s dad is trying to collect blood for Eli and when cats attack Connie, who has been turned into a vampire by Eli.

Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) The level of violence and gore in Eclipse is moderate because the movie focuses a lot on the love story rather than the fight scenes which are quite dominant in other vampire movies. The movie does include one fight scene, but the director has shown not to include much gore which makes the movie a bit softer than the other vampire movies. It is a complete contrast to the movie Let the Right One In, because the love story is the main focus for the viewer, whereas the vampire is the main focus in Let the Right One In.

How movie Violence and Gore has progressed: Through watching the wide range of Vampire Movies that we did, we noticed that the level of violence and gore has progressed over time and movies of today have more gore and violence than the movies of 1990’s.
