Rome and the Rise of Christianity

Roman Society Very structured and organized with various classes of people. Romans were largely polytheistic and believed in animism (spirits in all natural objects).

Roman Revolution Romans began to revolt because they were unhappy with Roman society. Treatment of farmers and soldiers and poor Roman leaders wanted to stop revolt because they have power.

Julio-Claudian Emperors String of Emperors including… Caligula, Claudius, Nero, and Tiberius (Vespasian) Harsh and power hungry. Treated the Roman people very poorly causing them to lose trust in their government.

Decline of Rome After Julio-Claudian leaders…Rome never the same. Threatened by outside attacks…increased army led to high financial demands. (more money) Robbery increased because people felt desperate. Taxes increased.

Look for Something New Romans needed security in their changing world. Old religions didn’t provide comfort in their changing world. Led to an increase in “Mystery Religions” Christianity most influential and important..

Rise of Christianity Jews were always allowed to live freely in Rome if they remained peaceful. Zealots wanted to overthrow Rome. Revolted and Romans retaliated by killing Jews During this time Jesus emerges. Teaches not of revolts but peaceful tactics Jesus received attention through his miracles, healing, and helping the poor and oppressed Jews.

Christian Beliefs Jesus rose from the dead and was the Savior. Disciples began to spread this message. Developed idea that could achieve salvation if they repented. Traveled through Palestine spreading the message, but many were killed. Saul of Tarsus (Paul) goal to convert gentiles. Established churches throughout Europe.

Why people liked Christianity 1. Monotheism offered a concrete belief system at a time of confusion. 2. Egalitarian (equal) views made all feel important unlike Roman hierarchical society. 3. Thought of afterlife and martyrs were inspiring. 4. Gave people a community to belong to. The persecution made that bond stronger.

The Spread of Christianity The new found peace and stability under Christianity made it popular. New emperors became more accepting of the religion. Missionaries spread the word quickly and made it easy for all to understand.

Questions What were some of the problems in Rome at this time that would cause people to want to become Christian? Why would the teachings of Jesus have appealed to many people? Why would the weak leaders of Rome have caused people to search for answers in religion? How are Christianity and Judaism similar and different in their relationship with the Roman Empire?
