Genes
Genes Cells come in all different varieties, each with a different function Genes are found in the nucleus and the mitochondria of your cells In all you have about 20,000 genes
Genes are small sections on DNA molecules When lined up, the DNA in one cell is several feet long In order for it to fit inside the nucleus it is coiled up
Genetic Code The order of your nitrogen bases spell out the language for the genetic code This code determines what you are (species) – each species has their own order of bases Genes are the recipe (instructions) for making specific proteins
The proteins your cells make determine your specific traits Your traits are things like hair color, height, blood type
Genes tell a cell how to function and what traits to express (show) Gene regulators turn different genes on or off in different cells to control cell function
What are genes? Explain how your genes determine your traits.
