ARTHURIAN LEGEND BY: TYLER HARMAN MRS.ECKMAN WISSLER ENGLISH 12 9/20/16

FACT OR FICTION We all know the ancient legend of King Arthur and Excalibur, but was him, or anything real? The tale of Arthur of Camelot and the Round Table was often debated as being real or not. In fact, historians never proved anything from the thousand year old legend to be true. Although, King Arthur might have been a Roman-affiliated king who fought off the Saxon invasion in the 5th and 6th centuries.

Geoffrey of Monmouth’s version Many people have written or spoke of the legend, such as Geoffrey of Monmouth, Robert De Boron, Chrétien de Troyes, and Sir Thomas Malory. Geoffrey on Monmouth’s version is different from the others, as every one is different. Geoffrey’s version puts Arthur as a world conqueror, defeating the Roman army in eastern France, but being wounded in battle. Celtic stories were adapted into this version.

Chrétien de Troyes’s version Chrétien de Troyes made Arthur out to be a ruler of a realm of marvels in five stories of adventure. He’s the one who introduced the theme of the Holy grail, and the love of Lancelot and Guinevere into the legend. Lancelot was one of Arthur’s knights and was in love with her, although she married King Arthur.

Thomas Malory’s version Thomas Malory’s version is the version that introduced the famous Excalibur from the stone, and his story is the most famous version out of them all. Thomas Malory portrays him as the “chosen one” who pulls the sword Excalibur from the stone, and he who fights and wins many wars.

Arthur, the Excalibur, and the Round Table As I have just said, Thomas Malory introduced Excalibur and the Round Table. The Excalibur is the legendary sword of King Arthur, often attributed with magical powers. The Round Table was made for Arthurs father, but when he died it was given to Guinevere’s father, and when Arthur asked Guinevere’s hand in marriage, it was given to him.

Lancelot and Guinevere Lancelot, who was one of Arthur’s most noble knights, and was the best swordsman and jouster of the age. His adultery with Queen Guinevere is discovered and this causes a civil war, which ultimately ends Arthur’s empire. Guinevere is the queen, a beautiful queen, but her ultimate downfall was falling in love with Lancelot, which is pretty much the most destructive force.
