Registration of teaching activities in Pure Frederik V. Christiansen, Department of Science Education, University of Copenhagen, Denmark Sidse Louise Schelde, Roskilde University Library, Denmark Anne Lyhne Høj, Aalborg University Library, Denmark

Agenda The need for showcasing teaching Proposal of national committee’s work (to the educational council of Universities Denmark) Recommendations on how Pure can accommodate the need Future development

Three out of four academics in Denmark spend around 50% of their time on teaching and teaching activities. Teaching load approximate. Data from www.lønoverblik.dk, 3rd quarter 2016

Status of teaching is a recognized quality issue Data from the report “Høje Mål” by The Expert Committee on Quality in Higher Education in Denmark.

The role of teaching: A case of “hemispatial neglect”

Why is registration in PURE a desirable option? The universities do not have a system for registering and showcasing teaching activities Academics are familiar with PURE (most use it already) All Danish Universities use the system already (transfer of data) Common platform for academic reporting – may be used in personal development review Possible to showcase teaching on universities’ portals

Proposal by national committee – main categories Teaching experience/activities Supervision of students Assessment / Examinations Educational development and administrative tasks Knowledge dissemination Participation in teacher development courses Educational development work Recommendation: Registration should be a possibility and recommendation, not a requirement.

Recommendations based on Pure Use of existing modules in Pure: Courses Activities Publications Personal profile Courses module is available from update 5.6 or 4.25 The new activitty module is available from update 5.7

Courses – the template Very simple template You cannot relate anything to courses, e.g. publications

Courses Primarily to showcase if you have developed a course Recommend registration of courses at a general level – not single lessons/guest lectures Guest lectures should be registered under Talks and presentations Courses could be used for registration of Supervision – but only at a general level In Denmark supervision is considered the same as teaching. Courses is only internal

Course level Use the field ”Course level” to distinguish between Bachelors, Masters, ph.d, Professional bachelors etc.

Format Use the field ”Format” to distinguish between Seminar, Workshop, Supervision, Simulation etc.

Occurrences Under ”Occurrences” you can register Semester, Year and Lecturer(s) You can register several ”Occurrences” Claim functionality – Lecturers

Role Use the field ”Role” to distinguish between Lecturer, Assistant, Teacher, Supervisor etc.

Activities Internal/external examination Use new templates for Examination – Internal examination and External examination Participation in formal teacher development courses Use template for Attending an event – register the different courses Educational development and administrative tasks (e.g. head of study) Use template for Memberships – register study board/school as external organisation
