Tarleton State University Teacher Education Program Program Overview, Admission Requirements, and Steps to Apply http://www.tarleton.edu/EPS Revised 3/22/17

Congratulations on your decision to pursue Teacher Certification at Tarleton State University! This presentation will go over some of the qualifications for becoming a teacher, detail the requirements for admission into the Teacher Education Program (TEP), and highlight some of the resources found on our website. Additional presentations will show you how to complete the TEP application and give you information on certification testing.

The Teacher Education Program is housed in Educator Preparation Services (EPS). Our website is http://www.Tarleton.edu/EPS. We are located on the Stephenville campus, in Suite 101 of the Math Building. The staff of Educator Preparation Services will be there to guide you throughout your time in the Teacher Education Program – from applying to the program, to getting placed for clinical teaching, to taking your certification exams (TExES tests), to finally making your recommendation to TEA for your standard teaching certificate. Teachers are held to a higher standard Teachers are held to a higher standard. One area looked at closely is criminal history. If you don’t have a criminal history, now is not the time to get one. If you do have a significant criminal history, you may need to rethink your career goals. In every class that includes field experiences, you will be asked to fill out a criminal history background check consent form. School districts will perform a name/DOB check. If there are any ‘hits’, they may elect not to allow you in their schools. When you apply for your standard certification through the Texas Education Agency (TEA), you will submit electronic fingerprints and a national criminal history review will be performed. The results could prevent you from being certified. As an additional hurdle, hiring school districts will have access to the results of your national criminal history check. Even though an infraction may not have kept you from being able to complete your field experiences and become certified, the school district may decide not to hire you.

Criminal history faqs (FROM THE Texas Education Agency) Will having a criminal history prevent me from becoming certified?    Possibly. Criminal histories are evaluated on a case by case basis by considering the following factors: the nature and seriousness of the crime; the relationship of the crime to the purposes that certification is required to become a professional educator; the extent to which certification might offer an opportunity to engage in further criminal activity of the same type as that in which the person previously had been involved; the relationship of the crime to the ability, capacity, or fitness required to perform the duties of a professional educator;  the extent of the applicant's past criminal activity; the age of the person when the crime was committed; the amount of time that has elapsed since the person's last criminal activity; the conduct and work activity of the person before and after the criminal activity; if the person has completed the terms of their probation or deferred adjudication; the evidence of rehabilitation; and other evidence, including letters of recommendation.

Preliminary Criminal History Evaluation A Preliminary Criminal History Evaluation is a non-mandatory, non-binding evaluation of an individual’s self-reported criminal history.  In addition, the agency obtains your name-based Texas criminal history information.  The service is provided to the requestor for a non- refundable fee.  The requestor will receive an evaluation letter by email from agency staff advising of potential ineligibility for educator certification.  For more information, see Preliminary Criminal History Evaluation of Educator Certification Candidates found on the Educator Preparation Services website under Student Resources – Overview – Texas Education Agency Information.

EDUC 3320 is the only Professional Development course that can be taken without being admitted into the TEP. It is normally while in this class that students apply for admission There are three admission periods each year – Spring, Summer, and Fall. Spring applications are due by February 15th, Summer applications are due by July 1st, and Fall applications are due by October 15th. For a full list of deadlines for each semester, choose Teacher Education Program – Apply Now! from the menu on the EPS website. Do not wait until the deadline day to submit your application. Applications will not be accepted late. If the deadline falls on a weekend or a day that Tarleton is closed, applications will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on the next day Tarleton is open following the deadline. If a student believes they will be admitted, they should go ahead and enroll in EDUC 3330 as soon as they are able. Although final decisions will not be made by the Educator Preparation Council until the Friday before the next semester begins, students who are being denied will have already been notified by this time.

Requirements for Admission The following requirements apply to all students applying for admission into the TEP. Requirements must be completed by the end of the application semester. See Apply Now! section for exact date. There may be additional requirements that are department specific. If you are denied admission into the Teacher Education Program, you will need to reapply with new paperwork and a new application fee by the next due date.

Admission Requirements $35 non-refundable application fee with each application $55 ASEP Technology Fee when admitted (we will send to TEA) 3 English courses with a C or better Speech with a B or better (choose from COMM 1311, 1315, or 2302) PSYC 3303 or 2308 or CHFS/FACS 3300 with a C or better EDUC 3320 with a C or better Completion of at least 12 hours in Certification Area; 15 hours if Math or Science No grade lower than C in your Certification Area or in Professional Development GPA of at least 2.75 in each Certification Area Block, Professional Development, and all coursework on Certificate Plan GPA of at least 2.75 at the end of semester overall on transcript or on last 60 hours (see GPA calculators slide for more information) All students must pass a departmental screening

Certificate Plans For a list of certifications offered and to see the corresponding certificate plans, click on Teacher Education Program – Certifications Offered. Certificate Plans show all the coursework required to complete that certification. They are also divided up to show the different blocks requiring a 2.75 GPA. The worksheets are set up so that letter grades can be entered in and the GPAs for each block will be displayed in the lower left. They are a great resource to use to be able to plug in grades and see how that will affect the GPAs. Courses in yellow are required for admission into the program. If a GPA or course letter grade box shows up red, that means it does not meet admission requirements.

Applications Click on Apply Now! to see Deadlines and Instructions to Apply. Students seeking certification in EC-6, 4-8, or All Level Special Education will follow the instructions for Elementary. Students seeking certification in 6-12, 7-12, 8- 12, or All Level Art, Music, PE, or Spanish will follow the instructions for Secondary/All Level. Other presentations will go through the actual application.

GPA Calculators The admission GPA is calculated first by using the overall GPA on the applicant’s transcript at the end of the application semester. If the overall GPA is lower than a 2.75, it will be recalculated based on the applicant’s last 60 hours of coursework. When calculating the Last 60 Hours GPA, full semesters must be used; therefore, the total hours may be in excess of 60. Either method of GPA calculation must meet the minimum 2.75 requirement for admission eligibility without exception. Overall GPA - Use your transcript from myGateway. At the end, under "Transcript Totals", plug in the GPA hours and Quality Points from the Overall line. List any courses you are currently taking under "Courses not showing". Add in the number of hours and the letter grade you received or expect to receive to get an updated Overall GPA. Last 60 Hours GPA - Use the Class History from your Degree Evaluation to see your courses listed in order taken regardless of location. Start with the most current coursework. Enter in the Semester, Term Graded Attempted and Term Quality Points. Make sure the Term GPA matches. Enter in enough semesters so that they, plus what you are currently enrolled in, total at least 60 hours. You must use full semesters. Enter the courses you are currently taking under Courses not showing. Add in the number of hours and the grade you received or expect to receive to get an updated Last 60 Hour GPA.

Probation Policy After you have been admitted into the Teacher Education Program, if at any time you no longer meet the requirements for admission/retention (made a D or your GPA dropped below a 2.75), you will be placed on probation for one long semester (Spring or Fall). If you rectify the problem, you will be lifted off of probation and returned to good standing. If you do not, you will be dropped from the program. You will not be allowed to continue in your professional development courses or clinical teach until you have reapplied and been admitted back into the program. For example, if you made a D or an F in a class in your major certification field in the Spring, you would be sent a letter in early summer saying you had been placed on probation for the Fall semester. If you retake that class and make a C or better during the Summer or during the Fall, you will be lifted off of probation and returned to good standing. At the end of the Fall semester if you have not replaced the grade with a C or better, you would be dropped from the program. You must be in good standing before you clinical teach.

Professional development sequence Students are eligible to take EDUC 3320 when they have 60 earned hours. Some departments may have additional requirements, such as being core complete. Students must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program before taking EDUC 3330. Normally students complete their applications to Clinical Teaching while in PD II; however, a student taking PD II in the summer would need to have completed their clinical teaching application the spring prior.* Students are not allowed to take a break between PD III/block and their clinical teaching semester.* If you must sit out a semester, it is best to delay taking EDUC 3320 or to take the break between EDUC 3320 and EDUC 3330. Students are only allowed to take EDUC 4335 and EDUC 4690 their clinical teaching semester.* * - 6-12 Ag, Food & Natural Resources should check with their department for clinical teaching deadlines. They will take AGSD 4310, 4320, and 4601 during their clinical teaching semester.

Timelines / Major Steps Apply to Teacher Education Program while in EDUC 3320. (Due dates are Feb. 15, July 1, or Oct. 15.) Once admitted, student is eligible to take EDUC 3330. Apply to Clinical Teaching. For all certifications other than 6-12 Ag, Food & Nat Resources, clinical teaching applications are due ONE FULL YEAR in advance of the semester you wish to clinical teach. Watch for signs or check the website under the Field Experiences tab Apply to Clinical Teach to find out meeting times and additional instructions to apply. (Due dates are Feb. 3 for Spring clinical teaching and Sep. 30 for Fall clinical teaching.) Pass content and PPR TExES test prior to clinical teaching. At the end of your clinical teaching semester you will be given the instructions and permission to apply for certification. Any applications submitted early will be deleted. After degrees have posted and you are a certified teacher, you are eligible to take other classroom based teaching TExES exams. Once passed, you can add that certification.

Certification by examination Once someone has their initial teaching certificate, they can challenge any classroom based teaching exam. To do so, they will first need to take and pass the corresponding TExES certification exam. (Be aware there is a limit of 5 attempts on any test.) After passing the exam(s), they can apply to TEA to have it added onto their certification by completing an application for “Certification by Examination”. Being certified in one of the Teacher Shortage Areas from the previous slide could make you more marketable. You may also wish to check our Facebook page or other online resources to see what positions districts are having a hard time filling.

Student Loan Forgiveness for Teachers Every year TEA submits a list of teacher shortage areas by subject matter and a list of designated low-income schools to the U.S. Department of Education. Teachers with certain types of student loans may qualify for partial loan forgiveness, deferment, or cancellation benefits. Eligibility for these benefits depends on the type of loan the teacher has, the date of his or her first loan, and whether the teacher serves in a designated low-income school or subject matter teacher shortage area.  Teacher Shortage Areas For the 2016-2017 school year, teacher shortage areas are the following: Bilingual/English as a Second Language - Elementary and Secondary Levels Career and Technical Education Computer Science/Technology Applications Mathematics Science Special Education - Elementary and Secondary Levels
