Course Introduction LIS 5472 Digital Libraries Week 2 Instructor: Dr. Sanghee Oh College of Communication & Information, Florida State University

Instructor: Sanghee Oh Assistant professor, SLIS FSU (shoh@cci.fsu.edu) Teaching courses LIS 4667 Advanced Health Informatics LIS 4785 Introduction to Health Informatics LIS 5008 Advanced Online Searching LIS 5472 Digital Libraries LIS 5872 Information Architecture Professional and research experiences related to DL Digital Library Curriculum Development Project (2006-2009) http://curric.dlib.vt.edu/

Course Objectives By the end of this course, students will be able to; define digital libraries, explain important concepts and issues and current and emerging tools associated with digital library design, management, and evaluation, compare and contrast the features and functions of various digital libraries, and design and develop a small-scale digital library using open source software.

Course Topics DL Definitions DL Project Management DL Applications Collection Development Digitization Metadata Interfaces & Users DL Evaluation DL Issues & Future

Pre-requisites LIS 5703 Information Organization (Pre- or co-taking)

Textbook No textbook is required; readings will be assigned each week, most of which are available online through FSU library.

Course Evaluation Assignments Points DL Reviews Featured DL of the Week 100 DL Research DL Annotated Bibliography 200 DL Practice (Group Project) DL Proposal Digitization Metadata Usability Test Proposal 50 Usability Test Report Presentation Project Completion & Final Report Class Participation Weekly Reading Posts Class Feedback In-class Activities

Class Participation (100 points) Weekly Reading Posts Students are required to post their comments/questions on weekly readings by midnight on a day before class. Class Feedback Students are required to provide their feedback on each class by answering the two questions. What is the clearest thing (e.g., topic, concept) presented in class today? What is the muddiest thing presented (e.g., topic, concept) in class today? Class Activities

Course Policy This course will not allow students to have an incomplete grade due to the heavy dependency on group works.

Late Work Late work will constitute a five percent (5%) per day penalty for the assignment (no exceptions unless otherwise negotiated with the instructor “prior to” the deadline). Weekly postings & class feedback Students will receive no point if they are late for these two postings. Students can miss up to 2 postings on each (e.g., personal reasons, technical access problems, etc.) If you have a problem to submit or post your assignments on Canvas, you need to email them to the instructor and the TA by deadline.

Communication A primary communication tool for this course is FSU email. When you email to the instructor, cc the TA all the time and vise versa, unless it is personal and only one of us needs to pay attention to. Canvas allows users to exchange messages in the system. There may be a delay to receive a response from either the instructor or the TA if you send messages through the system. If you need an immediate answer or feedback from the instructor or the TA, you should use FSU email.

DL Building Project Students’ Digital Library Projects Testimonials from previous students “"I learned a lot about creating a digital library, especially software that I might not have known about otherwise. The hands on practice is awesome, though some of the readings could be dry! ” "This course is a lot of fun, but also demands a lot of time. Be sure you have sufficient time to commit to the class work, group meetings, and group assignments.“ "I think it'd be good for future students to know that they will actually be creating their own mini digital library through this course. That was an extremely useful process for me."

Group Project This project requires a significant amount of group participation in order to complete the DL project. Be polite and respectful of one another. Most importantly, communicate and collaborate with your members through the process of the DL development. Enjoy this opportunity for group work! You will realize that group work can be more productive than individual work. No free riders, lurkers, or “suckers are allowed in group projects. Thus, a peer-evaluation will be conducted at the end of the course, and it will be reflected in your term project grade.
