Jesus’ Miracles Matthew 8:23-8:34

Who? Jesus His disciples “Legion” of demons

What? Jesus calms the storm Jesus heals two men possessed with demons

When? Jesus has just been to Capernaum where He healed the Centurion’s daughter. He is now traveling to the region of the Gadarenes.

Where? The Sea of Galilee & “The region of the Gadarenes” Notes: Capernaum was a predominantly Jewish city and is where Jesus was just prior to crossing the Sea of Galilee Gadara & Gerasa were in a gentile region. A hint to this is the swine mentioned in the account Crossing the Jordan most likely means crossing from Jewish into a Gentile or Pagan region.

Why? To show that He is God To show us that He is able “to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Scripture Comparison: Calming the Storm Read Psalm 107:28-32. Does this add any insight to our Matthew passage? (Matt 8:23-27) What should we do in response to Jesus’ “calming of the storm”? Read Mark 4:36-41. How does Mark’s account differ? How is it the same? How can we apply this passage? Read Luke 8:23-25 How does Luke’s account differ?

Scripture Comparison: Healing the demon-possessed men Read Mark 9:17-29. How does this different instance differ from our passage (Matt 8:28-34) How is it the same? How can we apply this passage? Read Mark 5:1-20. How does Mark’s account differ? Read Luke 8:26-39 How does Luke’s account differ?

How do we apply this? Acknowledge Him as God. Don’t be anxious…He is able to overcome ANYTHING. Remember that we must have faith. Only by His power are we able to overcome, so we must have faith in Him. We can be reassured in temptation. We can ask Him to help us through our temptation. This means we have even less of an excuse to sin.
