Welcome to Milton Future class of 2020

What to Expect… https://vimeo.com/119117006

I. Facts II. Rumors III. Advise

Facts Structure 6 classes (57 minute each) with 6 minutes of pass time Three lunch periods Progress Report every 6 weeks Final grades posted at the conclusion of each semester Yearlong Course = 1.0 credits One Semester Course = .5 credits Grading Scale: A (90-100) B (80-89) C (70-79) 7 additional points are added each passing grade in Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and College courses

I. Facts Middle School grades… High School Grades… Typically middle school grades are averaged together Semester 1 60 Semester 2 80 Final grade = 70 (Student passes the course) Not averaged together—each grade is independent Semester 1 60 Semester 2 80 (Student must retake failed semester for required courses)

I. Facts Credits 23 credits required English – 4 credits Math – 4 credits Science – 4 credits Social Studies – 3 credits CTAE/World Language/Fine Arts* – 3 credits Health/Personal Fitness – 1 credit (each .5) Electives – 4 credits **Note: 2 or 3 years of World Language credits may be required for college admission Waiver options for Personal Fitness may be available for next year if approved.

(Recommendations are taken by your current teachers for placement.) I. Fact Placement Options On level Honors Advanced Placement (AP) (Recommendations are taken by your current teachers for placement.)

I. Fact Typical Schedule On Level Honors 9th Lit GSE Alg I Biology Gov’t /Healh World Language Elective 9th Lit H GSE Accel Alg I/Geom A H Biology H Gov’t /Healh (AP Gov’t or AP Human) World Language Elective

II. Rumor Has It…

II. Rumor The test serves as the final exam for the following courses and is worth 20% of the grade: Language Arts Ninth Grade Literature and Composition American Literature and Composition Mathematics Algebra I (Beginning Winter 2015) Geometry (Beginning Winter 2015) Coordinate Algebra Analytic Geometry Science Biology Physical Science Social Studies United States History Economics/Business/Free Enterprise You will not be promoted to the next grade level if you do not pass the EOC/Ga Milestone test. False!

II. Rumor Also… Credit determines promotion: 5 credits = Sophomore 11 credits = Junior 17 credits = Senior

II. Rumor Only TAG students can take honors or AP courses. False! Being smart is not enough to determine if you should be in honors or AP courses. You must be a good student to be successful in these classes.

II. Rumor You really should take Health and/or Personal Fitness over the summer to get those courses out of the way. False? If you have a plan for what you will take in place of those courses then it could be helpful to take them early. However, most students end up taking something that they do not wish to take because they lack prerequisite courses or they do not have very many semester options.

II. Rumor It doesn’t really matter how well I do in the 9th grade. Colleges don’t really count 9th grade. False! Everything you do will be recorded on your transcript and evaluated by the colleges. Be aware that high school courses taken in middle school will count in your high school GPA as well.

II. Rumors Everyone gets to play sports in the 9th grade. You just have to have to have the proper credit to continue playing in the 10th grade. False! Yes. At the start of 9th grade credits are not a factor in participation. However, credits for eligibility are assessed at each semester. Students playing a sport, or are intending to play in the coming semester, will be evaluated. Athletes must be on track for promotion and have passed 5 out of 6 courses (including summer).

III. Advise Work on your study habits now! Have an honest conversation with your teachers about what you can work on to improve as a student. Prioritize school. Do your homework…always. There are lots of course options…choose wisely (change opportunities are limited). Balance!
