How did the star-maiden come about? Astraea is the daughter of the Titans Astraeus and Eos but some sources claim she is the daughter of Zeus and Themis. Astraeus: God of the dusk and winds Son of Titans Crius and Eurybia Eos: Goddess of dawn Daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia Each of her and Astraeus’s children represented what occurs during the union of dusk and dawn

A little more about Eos Some sources report Eos as being the spouse of the god Ares. The relationship between Eos and Ares made Aphrodite mad so she cursed Eos with unquenchable sexual urge. This curse resulted in Eos abducting various young men. Some of the young men consisted of Tithonus, Memnon, and Emathion, whom she each had two kids with. Memnon ended up fighting with the Trojans in the Trojan War and died.

Anemoi The siblings of Astraea who were the four wind gods- Boreas: North wind Brings cold weather Notus: South Wind Associated with hot winds coming in after midsummer Brings the bad weather of late summer Zephyrus: West Wind Gentlest Wind Linked to Spring Responsible for the blooming of lands Eurus: East Wind Unlucky Brings rain and warm temperatures

Grandparents of Astraea The grandparents of Astraea were Crius and Eurybia. They were the parents of Astraeus, Astraea’s father. Crius: Son of Uranus and Gaea Considered one of four pillars (south) which separates the heavens from the Earth Sided with the Titans in the Titanomachy Dethroned his father Eurybia: Represents the mastery of the sea Daughter of Pontus and Gaea Three children- Astraeus, Perses, and Pallas

Dike and Nemesis Astraea is closely related to the goddess’ Dike and Nemesis. Dike: Protector of fair judgement She lived on Earth for the Golden and Silver Age and once men became greedy she got enraged and went to the sky Libra is closely positioned in the sky near Virgo which Libra represents Dike and Virgo represents Astraea Nemesis: Rightful indignation Goddess of divine retribution and revenge Used in Greek tragedies and other literary works to give the protagonist their due

Astraea’s Departure Astraea dwelt upon the Earth during the Golden Age with mankind. Once the Iron and Bronze Age occurred, bringing along much misery, wickedness, and lawlessness, Astraea abandoned the Earth. Zeus sent her amongst the stars where she became the constellation Virgo.

When Astraea returns? Astraea is best known for being the last immortal to live among mankind on Earth before leaving in misery and disappointed of humanity’s wickedness and brutality. When Astraea left, she essentially took the Golden Age along with her. Once Astraea left, humanity realized their mistake and hoped for her return. Therefore it is believed that when she returns one day she will bring back the Golden Age, putting an end to suffering.
