Mississippi Community College Admissions Any student who meets the graduation requirements for high school graduation is automatically eligible for entrance into a 2-year or community college. *The ACT test is also required for admission. Remember, a composite score of 20 on the ACT will award you FREE tuition at Holmes CC.

I want to be a SENIOR! In order to be classified as a Senior, you must have: * completed English I, II and III * completed 3 maths * completed 13 additional units for a minimum of 18 units total

IMPORTANT! Please do not rely on Summer School to become a Senior! Did you know that you must have at least a 55 in the class you fail in order to even attend Summer School? Anything lower, Summer School is not even an option!

English recommendations Regular English III now = Regular English IV or Early College next year Accelerated English III now = Accelerated English IV, Early College, or AP English IV (depending on your teacher’s recommendation) AP English III now = you are highly encouraged to consider only AP English IV (pending teacher rec)

Early College is college classes taken on the campus of GHS Please take note that to be eligible, students MUST currently have an ACT score of 18 AND a GPA of 3.0 Please do NOT sign up for Early College classes unless you currently eligible

Make sure you take a math your senior year!! Math Options Geometry Algebra II Algebra III Ad. Math Plus Algebra II SREB Math Early College Algebra III Calculus AP Cal Early College Make sure you take a math your senior year!!

Algebra II recommendations If you are in Algebra II now with a 74 or lower average and a 18 or lower on the ACT, we recommend SREB math next year. Only those students with an ACT score lower than an 18 will be allowed to take SREB math. If your average is above 75, we recommend Algebra III or Early College (as long as you currently have above a 18 on the ACT)

Every Senior must take: History Every Senior must take: .5 Government .5 Economics **Those students who meet AP requirements might consider AP Macro Econ or AP Government instead** * (AP Requirements: Grade of an A in your current Social Studies course and your current Social Studies teacher must sign your choice sheet.)

Science Recommendations The GHS Science Department recommends a B or better in Biology and Algebra I to be successful in Chemistry. B average or better is recommended in Biology, Algebra II and Chemistry if you are considering Physics In order to take AP Physics, students must have completed Algebra III or higher

What is AP and WHY take it? AP is college-level courses taught to well-prepared high school students WHY TAKE IT? Gain an edge on College preparation Stand out in the college admissions process Broaden your knowledge Possible College Credit

IMPORTANT MEETING!! Any student interested in taking an AP or Early College level course for the 2017-18 school year are highly encouraged to attend a Parent Meeting with their parents on Thursday, January 19 at 5:30

Early Dismissal Please remember that Early Dismissal is a PRIVILEGE and is NOT a guarantee!

Students can no longer sign up for Study Hall! There is a place on the choice sheet to indicate whether study hall would be acceptable in the event of a scheduling conflict.

ACT classes available: Academic Enrichment: ACT Prep I: designed to help students obtain an ACT score of at least a 20. Students should have scored no higher than a 20 on either the ACT or pre-ACT. ACT Prep II: designed to help students obtain an ACT score of at least a 29. Students should have scored in the mid 20’s on either the ACT or pre-ACT. Students who have taken the PSAT class are not eligible.

iCAP Each student has an iCAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan) on file. The iCAP was completed by you based on your interests at the time. You may view your iCAP through your ActiveStudent account. It offers a list of suggested courses to take in order to prepare you for your desired career field. Therefore, may assist you when picking classes for next year.

Your choice sheet is due: To your English teacher NO later than Friday, January 20 COMPLETED AND ENTERED INTO ACTIVESTUDENT! ALL alternate courses filled out AND parent signature (AND teacher signature if needed)

ActiveStudent All current Juniors will have access to course requests in ActiveStudent on THURSDAY, JANUARY 28 Unless you have changed it, your login and password will be the same you use for your laptop and your school email. If you have issues logging in, please see Mrs. Bergeron in the Counselor’s Office. Make sure you can login prior to Jan. 28!

REMINDER: When entering your choices into the computer, please: DO NOT add alternate courses Leave all courses as “required”

NO SCHEDULE CHANGES Therefore, choose wisely!

Food for thought! The BEST way to increase your ACT score……….. take challenging courses! Don’t take the easy way out and take easy courses! And don’t forget: a 20 on the ACT equals FREE tuition at Holmes CC!
