The Ever-Changing Earth 2.4ab The Ever-Changing Earth

Starter Activity – Key words Use the pictures to work out the key words for today’s lesson 1 2 3 PIECE CRUST CORE MANTLE W CHALLENGE ener

Lesson Objective – To be able to describe the structure of the Earth 18 June 2018 Keywords: Crust, Core, Mantle, Alfred Wegner

Explain using Key words how could a Cadbury Creme egg could be used as a model for the structure of the Earth. Outer Core Made from molten nickel and iron (magnetic) Crust Relatively thin and rocky Mantle Has the properties of a solid, but can flow very slowly Inner Core Made from solid nickel and iron

What do you know already about plate tectonics? Keywords; Crust, Core, Mantle, Alfred Wegner What do you know already about plate tectonics?

Keywords; Crust, Core, Mantle, Alfred Wegner Plate tectonics The Earth's crust and upper part of the mantle are broken into large pieces called tectonic plates. These are constantly moving at a few centimetres each year. Although this doesn't sound like very much, over millions of years the movement allows whole continents to shift thousands of kilometres apart. This process is called continental drift

In groups of 4 you will receive evidence relating to Alfred Wegener. Group Work Group Roles Talk Leader – It is your job to manage the discussion. Try to get all members of the group to contribute. Make sure everyone stays on task. Organiser – In charge of time keeping & ensuring that every one is focused on the task. Scribe – In charge of writing down the groups ideas. Remember everyone’s ideas and answers are important. Reporter - It is your job to manage the resources & the equipment that your group needs. In groups of 4 you will receive evidence relating to Alfred Wegener. Using the evidence to help you, I want you to answer the following question.

The question Firstly describe what his theory was. In this question you will be assessed on using good English, organising information clearly and using specialist terms where appropriate. Firstly describe what his theory was. Explain what evidence there is today to support his theory. Alfred Wegener’s theory of continental drift was initially dismissed by the world of science. (6marks)

T hink about what the question is asking for Alfred Wegener’s theory of continental drift was initially dismissed by the world of science. S top for a second T hink about what the question is asking for O rganise (a simple table, flow diagram) P en to paper Examiners report: “Some answers where poorly organised with large quantities of writing crossed out.” “It was surprising how many students failed to use upper case at the beginning of a sentence.”

Peer assessment Indicative Content: 1-2 3-4 5-6 No relevant content Poor SPG and not many specialist terms. No structure. Included at least one detail from the content. Ok SPG with a couple of mistakes, some structure. Included at least 2 points from the content. Good SPG with only 1 mistake and well structured. Included 5 or more points including all specialist terms. Indicative Content: Described his theory that the continents were all once joined and 1 super continent: Pangaea It was thought this happened by continental drift due to convection currents underneath the plates caused movement Evidence, fossil evidence on matching sides of continents, seafloor spreading, shapes fit like a jigsaw
